Trick or Treat Giveaway Hop 2017 | Kiss

October 20, 2017 95 Comments

This year, I decided to reach a little big and try and teach a trick to our new Great Pyrenees foster puppy, Kiska. Since she was picking up on things so quickly, I figured, let’s try and use her for this year’s Trick or Treat Giveaway Hop!

Let’s get a kiss from ‘Kis’ka’ 😉

The easiest way for me to teach ‘kiss’ has always been to start with touch. If your dog already knows touch, feel free to skip ahead. If not, it’s super easy.

Touch

Kiska, our Great Pyrenees puppy, at 10 weeks.

In my opinion, ‘touch’ is one of the most versatile tricks you can teach your dog. It can be used for multiple tricks, such as turning off a light, pushing open a door, etc. It’s also a great distraction exercise in a stressful situation. When Mauja is feeling stressed, we play games with touch to keep her mind occupied.

  1. Present your dog your hand. Dogs are naturally curious animals, so typically, they will reach their snoot out to touch your hand. When he does, click and treat.
  2. Put your hand out of sight for a second or two and then show your hand again. When the snoot touches your hand, click and treat again.
  3. Continue practicing with both hands, at multiple angles, and from varying distances.

Note: Touch can also be taught with a target stick rather than your hand.

Kiss

Kiska, our Great Pyrenees puppy, at 10 weeks.

Once you feel your dog is responding positively to touch, it’s time to move on to kiss.

  1. Move your hand (or target stick) close to your lips for your dog to touch with her snout.
  2. Move your hand closer and closer to your lips (or cheek if you prefer the kiss there), continuing to ask for touch.
  3. Ask your dog becomes more comfortable with the position, place your hand right next to your lips to lure your dog to ‘kiss’ your lips (or ‘touch’ your lips).
  4. Continue to practice asking for ‘kiss’ while gradually removing your hand as a lure.

Now that you’ve learned the trick, how about we discuss the treat?

Let’s Get to the Trick!

This year, I taught Atka how to “snuggle” for the Trick or Treat Giveaway Hop. Unfortunately, he became quite sick a few weeks ago and has been on an extremely strict diet – he hasn’t been able to keep much in his stomach.

As a typical Great Pyrenees, he’s unwilling to do anything without the prompting of a treat (which he’s not allowed to have). So, I’m not going to be able to share a fun video like I did last year. Instead, I have a tutorial for you to teach your own dogs!

Snuggle

With Atka well on his way to becoming a therapy dog, I thought it would be adorable for him to learn how to snuggle with those he’s visiting. Of course, he’ll lean on them and beg for pets, but I wanted him to know how to put his head in the lap of another person. So, we decided to learn ‘snuggle’.

How To Do It:

  1. Start in a seated position where your dog can easily access your lap.
  2. Hold a treat between your knees.
  3. As your dog leans toward the treat, click and treat when his head touches your lap (if your dog isn’t trained with a clicker, here’s a great tutorial or you can say ‘yes!’ instead).
  4. After a few rounds of this, begin to add the clue ‘snuggle’.
  5. As your dog begins to understand the concept of putting his head in your lap, require him to hold still for a few seconds before clicking and treating.
  6. Gradually increase the time you have your dog keep his head on your lap.

Atka learned to keep his head in my lap for about 10 seconds before I gave his release word, ‘okay’. It took a few weeks of working before we got to this point, so don’t be disappointed if your dog isn’t willing to hold his head on your lap for long periods of time right away. Just practice, practice, practice!
