Giant Breed-Friendly Hotel Chains

July 21, 2016 21 Comments

Traveling with giant breed dogs can be difficult, but it doesn't have to be! Here are our top picks for hotel chains that allow dogs of any size to stay for free!

Giant Breed-Friendly Hotel Chains

Traveling with dogs is difficult, but traveling with multiple giant breeds can be quite the frustrating endeavor. Either the hotel only allows one dog, small dogs, or charges a ridiculous pet fee – I’ve seen hotels where the charge was $20 per pet per night.

That adds up quick.

Being a military family and also one who likes to take their dogs everywhere, we’ve done our fair share of traveling with dogs. We always make sure we find a giant breed friendly hotel without a pet fee and have had great success with a few hotel chains. Here are a few of our go-to hotels:

*Pet policies can change at any time and vary throughout the same hotel chain. Always be sure to call and double check the pet policy where you plan to stay.

La Quinta

Hands down, this is our number one choice. When we know where we plan to stop for the night, we will do a quick search for a La Quinta. If there isn’t one where we planned to stop, we will often change our plans to find one. With over 900 hotels in North America, there’s always one around the corner.

Not only does La Quinta allow multiple giant breed dogs, but their rooms are great. Every room we’ve stayed in has had a fridge and a microwave – if you have food sensitivities you know how important this is! Add on a free continental breakfast and I have a happy husband (and puppies because he always gets them some bacon!).

Kimpton Hotels

After Nick and I got married, we decided to do a mini honeymoon. We had traveled across the country with Mauja and Atka so they could be in our wedding, so naturally, we took them with us!

I can’t even begin to tell you how much attention those two drew as we walked through New York City.

During our time in NYC, we stayed in a Kimpton Hotel. I had never been to one, but I was blown away by their pet policy. Kimpton states, “If your pet fits through the door, we’ll welcome them in”; and they do more than just welcome them in. From providing bedding and bowls to having a Director of Pet Relations, they have your furry friend covered. Kimpton even allows pets at their nightly wine reception. Need I say more?

Motel 6

If you’re looking for an affordable place to catch a few hours of sleep, Motel 6 is for you. Motel 6 has no limit on pet size or number and doesn’t charge a pet fee. It’s definitely a very basic hotel chain, but it has everything you need and you can’t beat the price!

What are your favorite pet-friendly hotel chains?

The Complete Checklist for Moving with Your Dog

May 23, 2016 4 Comments

Will you be moving or taking a trip soon with your dog? Here's a complete guide to ensuring a smooth transition!
DepositPhotos|belchonock

As many of you know, we will be packing up and moving to a new state at the beginning of June. We are extremely excited to move and cannot wait to be in a new location. I know the fluffies are going to absolutely love it – especially their new backyard! Even though Mauja has already lived in four houses, I know the move will still be rough for her.

Mauja is easily stressed and Atka is the most routine-driven dog I have ever met. He does not like change! In order to lessen their stress and ensure a smooth transition, I’ve created myself a dog-focused moving checklist 🙂 Here’s the guide to moving with your dog!

Visit Your Vet

Before you move, make an appointment with your vet. You want to make sure your dog is up to date on all of his vaccinations and requirements, especially rabies, before the move. If you will be visiting dog-populated areas (and your dog doesn’t already receive the vaccination), it might be a good idea to discuss Bordetella with your vet.

While not always required, a health certificate is often necessary to cross state lines with your dog. Your vet will be able to perform a health examination to ensure your dog is healthy enough to travel and prevent the spread of disease. You should also request your dog’s health history to make the transition to a new vet an easier process.

Most vets have contacts across the country, so it’s a good idea to ask for any recommendations. This may help you find a suitable vet before you even move. Also, be sure to check the licensing rules for your new home and update licenses accordingly.

Update Identification

How long has it been since you’ve updated your dog’s ID tags? Now is a great time to ensure the information is accurate and most importantly, includes a phone number. This is especially important if you don’t have a house right away and will be living in a hotel or other temporary location.

If you dog is microchipped, check that chip! A microchip can shift so it’s important to have your dog’s chip checked for functionality. Make sure all of your dog’s online chip information is up to date and that you enter your new address into the database once you move.

Research Pet-Friendly Stops

If your move is going to take multiple days, take some time to determine your route and where you can stop with your dog. Find nice parks or walking trails for fluffy to stretch his legs and get some exercise, which will help reduce the travel stress.

You may also want to look for pet-friendly restaurants so everyone can take a break from the car and enjoy a relaxing meal. Most importantly, know where the pet-friendly hotels are located!

Pack Safety Items

This includes a crate, baby gates, or any car harness that your dog wears. Crates and baby gates are also very helpful for hotel stays if your dog shows any destructiveness when traveling. While neither Mauja or Atka have to be crated in hotels anymore, we do often bring baby gates, just in case.

Make a Travel Kit

Our travel kit, while massive, is exceptionally helpful in keeping a move stress-free. Here’s what we included in our travel kit:

  • Food (regular food and a topper to encourage eating when stressed)
  • Food and water bowls
  • Favorite treats
  • Chews (bully sticks, antlers, etc.)
  • Bottled water
  • Basic grooming supplies
  • Paper towels and Nature’s Miracle (in case of an accident/car sickness)
  • Poop bags
  • Blanket/bed
  • Toys
  • Medications/supplements
  • 1st aid kit
  • Grooming wipes
  • Leash
  • Collar, harness, gentle leader, etc.

Now that you have all of your things in order, you’re ready for moving with your dog! Wish us luck on our new adventure 🙂

In a perfect world, I’d be able to take Mauja and Atka with me wherever I go. Travel would be easy, places would be pet friendly, and I could easily care for my pups. I mean, no one can take better care of them than I can, right?

Unfortunately, we don’t live in a perfect world and not every place is accommodating of our four-legged family members. Then I’m left with the decision of who to trust with the fluffies.

East Coast Part 2

September 2, 2014 20 Comments

What a week.

After visiting Nick’s parents in Virginia, we made our way north to PA to visit my family and get some more wedding planning accomplished.

I don’t recommend trying to be productive in a 2 1/2 day trip. It’s rough! Thankfully, we were able to get everything done that we needed. [Read more…] about East Coast Part 2

Are We Crazy?

Great Pyrenees Road Trip

I think we are.

This weekend we undertook an extreme challenge:  traveling from Montana to Virginia with both dogs.

According to Google Maps, the trip should take approximately 30 hours. Well, we all know how that goes. Once you factor in traffic and stops long enough for the pups to stretch their legs, several hours get tacked on.

I was a bit worried about how the dogs were going to handle the long drive. They love being in the car, but can anyone like being in the car for two days straight? I wasn’t sure.

Aside from Mauja throwing up all over the hotel room (why we always bring cleaning products!), we made it through without any major issues. For the most part, they just napped the day away. We brought plenty of new toys and time-consuming treats to keep them occupied, but they were content to snooze away.

We made frequent stops where Nick and I would take turns running around with them to ensure their legs got a good stretch. We also made sure to have the windows open when they were awake. The new smells kept them very entertained!

Overall, I could not be more pleased with how the trip to the east coast went. Paws crossed that the trip itself and the drive back go just as well!

Check back over the week to see all of our adventures!
