5 Hiking Safety Tips + a Fluffy Adventure

October 12, 2015 10 Comments

Great Pyrenees HikingNick and I love to get out on hikes with Mauja and Atka. We’re not the “spend all day hiking through the woods” kind of people, but we like to hit up trails that will have us hiking for a few hours. Mauja and Atka absolutely love putting their double dews to work as we hike through new terrian with interesting smells.

This past weekend we took a fun family trip before Nick leaves town for training. We took the pups to a dog-friendly farmer’s market, on a hike, and to PetSmart to get some birthday toys for Atka (PS – he turns 2 tomorrow!).

Hikes can be a great way to bond with your dog and offer him some stimulation to keep his brain and body youthful. However, there’s more to hikes than just grabbing your pup and hitting the trails. Here’s a few tips to ensure a safe experience:

  1. Ensure your dog is wearing a well-fitted collar with tags. You can never be too careful when you’re out hiking with your dogs. In case the unthinkable happens and you get separated from your dog, you want to make it easy for him to get back home.
  2. If your dog isn’t 100% reliable, use a leash. An off-leash pyr is a “disapyr” so Mauja and Atka are never off-leash for our hikes. Not to mention there are just too many unpredictables. We live in Montana with all sorts of wildlife that the fluffies might be too interested in warding off. We want to “keep the peace” in the woods. Plus, I always worry about poison or ledges that they wouldn’t be paying attention to.
  3. Pack the essentials. Pack plenty of water, poop bags, and a basic first aid kit. If your pup is used to wearing a backpack, he can help carry the load! Kaeto loved wearing his backpack for walks – it gave him a job to do and helped him mellow out.
  4. Keep your dog’s fitness level in mind. Just because your dog enjoy walks through the neighborhood or zoomies in the yard doesn’t mean he’ll be ready for a hike. Start slow and gradually work up to longer hikes as you and your dog feel comfortable.
  5. Tell someone your plans. Let a friend or family member know where you’ll be hiking and when you expect to be back. In case something happens and you’re out of cell service, someone will know if you need assistance.

Great Pyrenees HikingIf you plan ahead and prepare for your hike, you and your dog should have a fantastic time. Do you like to hike with your dog?

Hello Nuzzle

When someone brings home their first Great Pyrenees, there are a few things I always suggest.

  1. Get them into a routine.
  2. Begin training on day one.
  3. Never let them off leash (an off leash pyr is a “disapyr”).
  4. Consider a GPS tracker and pet insurance.

Nuzzle is a GPS tracking collar and smartphone app that can be used for both dogs and cats. We always have our phones within arms reach, so why not be able to track your furry kids at the same time? The app allows you to track your dog everywhere he goes. Curious about how much ground your dog covers in a day? You’ll know that, too!

The collar is powered by cell service so it will be effective on all of your adventures. This means that it will require a data plan, but don’t worry – Nuzzle covers that. The tracker is also waterproof, includes rechargeable and removable batteries, and is detachable, meaning it can be placed on any existing collar.

My favorite feature is the geo-fencing ability. You can set a “safe” area where your dog is allowed to be. If your pup wanders out of that area, you’ll be alerted through the Nuzzle app!

Lastly, you will also receive a free trial of pet insurance, which I highly recommend (especially if you have giant breeds – those vet bills are expensive!).

I’m really excited for Nuzzle to be available! It will give many pet parents peace of mind when they’re away from their dog or out on an adventure. In the meantime, you can follow Nuzzle on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Do you think Nuzzle would be useful for your dog?

It's Dog or Nothing Thanksgiving

I can’t believe Thanksgiving is only a few days away. With all of the holiday celebrations, we tend to forget that many things we enjoy are dangerous to our dogs. Even if we don’t directly feed them these snacks, mischief is bound to ensue 😉 Here are a few things to make sure your dog avoids this Thanksgiving. [Read more…] about Thanksgiving Pet Safety

5 Reasons I Leash My Dogs

5 Reasons I Leash My Dogs - It's Dog or Nothing

Running into off-leash dogs can be infuriating. I used to get so huffy when I walked Kaeto and a dog would come bounding toward us. Just one incident could set us back months of training. The absolute worst was when people would yell “oh, my dog’s friendly”. What about my dog? What about me? I’m very lucky with Mauja and Atka because they have never shown any signs of leash reactivity, but there are more reasons for me to keep them on leash. [Read more…] about 5 Reasons I Leash My Dogs
