Feeding Your Great Pyrenees with The Farmer’s Dog

November 27, 2018 5 Comments

Feed fresh and keep your dog happy with The Farmer's Dog. It's a favorite for the Great Pyrenees at It's Dog or Nothing!

Feeding dogs can be tough. Feeding Great Pyrenees can be even more tough.

Pyrs can be crazy particular eaters. They’ll like a food for a day, they turn their noses at it the next. It doesn’t matter what it is—dry, canned, or fresh—they get bored very easily.

Feeding three giant breed dogs gets really expensive, really fast. I only want the best for my three, but I also have to be able to pay the mortgage—so they can have their yard (because of course that was the main deciding factor when purchasing our home).

Oh, and not to mention the bully stick budget. That’s a hefty one for sure. So, we have to be realistic and balance.

Finding quality dog food, while still sticking to a budget, is definitely a difficult task. I absolutely love the idea of fresh dog food delivered to my door, but they all typically have one plan.

You have to sign up so you’re feeding your dogs 100% that brand of food, 100% of the time. They make is extremely difficult to customize a feeding plan, which most of us find essential.

That’s why I’m thrilled to have found The Farmer’s Dog.

The Farmer’s Dog

First, signing up for The Farmer’s Dog is SO FUN.

You start by talking about your dog’s weight and personality.

Atka, a Great Pyrenees, filling out his profile for The Farmer's Dog.

You also add info about each dog’s body type, activity level, eating style, and allergies/concerns. Kiska is allergic to almost everything, so I loved being able to add that to her profile.

After adding all your pup’s info, you’re given your recipe options:

Okay okay, but let’s get to the best part.

Like I said before, my least favorite thing about signing up for meal plans like this is the inability to tailor it to our needs. I’m going to be honest—while the floofs eat better than I do, I still can’t afford exactly what I want to feed them.

We have to compromise.

Mauja, Atka, and Kiska are not on The Farmer’s Dog as their only food source. They all get a small amount of dry and/or canned food added in.

Feed fresh and keep your dog happy with The Farmer's Dog. It's a favorite for the Great Pyrenees at It's Dog or Nothing!

You really can’t beat the convenience of The Farmer’s Dog.

I’ve adjusted their meal plan so they are getting 25–50% of their daily caloric needs through The Farmer’s Dog. Then, I can round out their diet with other food sources.

You can also change the shipping frequency if you’re tight on freezer space—which we always are.

Merrick Supports My Passion – K9s for Warriors

June 1, 2017 1 Comment

Ever wonder how you can support our military members and veterans? Merrick Pet Care has partnered with K9s for Warriors with their new Backcountry Hero's Banquet formula!

Merrick Supports My Passion – K9s for Warriors

I am a BlogPaws Conference Sponsored Blogger on behalf of Merrick Pet Care®. I am being compensated to help share Merrick’s commitment to the Human Animal Bond and K9s For Warriors program with my readers and fellow Influencers, Neither Merrick or BlogPaws are responsible for the content of this article.

If you’ve been around awhile, you know I have a soft spot for the military. My husband, Nick, is active duty Air Force, and I have several friends and family members serving. Growing up in a military town, this lifestyle has become engrained in my mind.

Ever wonder how you can support our military members and veterans? Merrick Pet Care has partnered with K9s for Warriors with their new Backcountry Hero's Banquet formula!

A huge passion of mine is K9 for Warriors, and I’ve been contemplating how to become involved in this wonderful organization for years. I had dreams to rescue Great Pyrenees and train them to be therapy dogs for our military members/veterans suffering from PTSD. Perhaps one day, I’ll bring that dream to fruition.

In the meantime, I’m searching for other ways to support our service members, both past and present, and their canine companions.

Since 2015, Merrick Pet Care has been the exclusive dog food partner for K9s for Warriors by providing their meals and training treats (the Power Bites have always been a fluffy favorite). These specially trained rescue dogs help empower their warriors to return to civilian life with independence. As of May 2017, K9s for Warriors has rescued 570 military dogs and 312 Warriors.

I got the chance to investigate the Hero’s Banquet formula a bit more in-depth a few weeks ago at BlogPaws. My biggest concern was the current quality of the ingredients included. Since Mauja and Atka are on a rotation diet, I’m always looking for new brands/formulas to add to their mix. Merrick’s Backcountry Raw Hero’s Banquet formula looked like the pyrfect way to mix up their meals.

Merrick Backcountry is a grain free, all-natural formula packed with protein-rich kibble and freeze dried raw bits. The kibble contains deboned meat, poultry, or fish as the number one ingredient and is full of omega fatty acids. The freeze dried raw pieces lock in a fresh taste and delicious aroma and texture.

The combination of exotic proteins plus flavorful raw bits keeps Mauja and Atka interested in the food. When I first tested Merrick Backcountry with the fluffies, I was worried that they would pick out the raw pieces and ignore the kibble (they are insanely particular about their food!). Thankfully, they happily ate everything in their bowls. My assumption is that the raw bits added an extra boost of yum to convince the fluffies to eat everything.

Ever wonder how you can support our military members and veterans? Merrick Pet Care has partnered with K9s for Warriors with their new Backcountry Hero's Banquet formula!

Not only did my picky eaters love the food, but their tummies tolerated it very well. That’s a double win for this fluffy mama!

What Does it Take to be a #WellnessPet?

October 21, 2016 34 Comments

Is your dog a #WellnessPet? Here's how I tell if my Great Pyrenees are showing the 5 Signs of Wellness. This post is sponsored by Wellness and the BlogPawsTM Pet Influencer Network™. I am being compensated to help share the availability of Wellness Products at PetSmart, but we only share information we feel is relevant to our readers. Neither Wellness nor PetSmart is responsible for the content of this article.

What Does it Take to be a #WellnessPet?

Earlier this year, we were beyond thrilled to share with you that one of our favorite lines of dog food, Wellness® Complete Health™, had gone grain-free. Mauja and Atka hadn’t eaten the original Complete Health line in quite awhile due to being on an entirely grain-free diet, so we loved the opportunity to incorporate an old favorite back into their rotation diet.

It’s no secret that we are huge fans of the Wellness products. Aside from the Complete Health Grain-Free line, we’ve also talked a lot about Wellness TruFood and the benefits of a baked food for your dog.

Today, we’re going to round out our Wellness line-up by talking about Wellness® CORE®! While Wellness CORE and Wellness Complete Health Grain-Free are two of our all-time favorites, you’re certain to see the 5 Signs of Wellness after switching your dog to any of the Wellness products.

Is your dog a #WellnessPet? Here's how I tell if my Great Pyrenees are showing the 5 Signs of Wellness.
Wellness Complete Health Grain-Free or Wellness CORE?

5 Signs of Wellness

Skin & Coat Health

By including essential vitamins and minerals as well as quality Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids, your dog’s skin and coat will be exceptionally snugglable.

Energy

High-quality proteins, grain-free sources of carbohydrates, and healthy fats provide your dog with the energy necessary to engage in his favorite activities – whether that’s a sprightly game of fetch or a long nap on the couch.

Digestive Health

Healthy sources of fiber, chicory root extra, and probiotics are the perfect combination to support a healthy digestive system.

Eyes, Teeth, and Gums

Appropriate levels of Vitamin A are incorporated into Wellness products to support healthy eyes and calcium and phosphorus support healthy, strong teeth and gums.

Immunity

Fruits and vegetables full of antioxidants as well as nutritional supplements, such a Vitamin E, help to support a healthy immune system.

Is your dog a #WellnessPet? Here's how I tell if my Great Pyrenees are showing the 5 Signs of Wellness.

Fluffy Wellness

How do I know when the fluffies are displaying the 5 Signs of Wellness? Easy.

  • Their fur is pyrfectly snuggable.
  • Their eyes speak to my soul.
  • Their smiles sparkle.
  • Their coats glisten.
  • They bounce when I say, “walk”.
  • They leap into the car with glee.
  • They make me feel like the most amazing person in the world <3

Wellness CORE

Is your dog a #WellnessPet? Here's how I tell if my Great Pyrenees are showing the 5 Signs of Wellness.Wellness CORE was the first food Mauja and Atka had when they transitioned from puppy food to an adult recipe. It has been a favorite for several reasons:

  • Wellness CORE is a grain-free, protein-rich formula
  • No corn, wheat, animal by-products, or anything artificial
  • It’s available in several flavors: Original, Ocean, Wild Game, Small Breed, Large Breed, Puppy, and Reduced Fat
  • There’s more than just dry food. Your dog can try Air-Dried Formulas, Wet Formulas, and several types of treats.

Our Go-To Tummy Soothing Recipe for Dogs

October 6, 2016 13 Comments

When dealing with upset stomachs in dogs, there are a few go-to ingredients that can assist in helping your dog to feel better. Here is what we feed our dogs when they're suffering from diarrhea or other stomach upset.

Our Go-To Tummy Soothing Recipe for Dogs

We’ve had a rough week here in the fluffy house. It started with Atka waking me up in the middle of the night needing to go outside.

And then he woke me up again.

And again.

And again.

I haven’t had a full night’s sleep in over a week. I’m also on our second bottle of carpet cleaner…

Since it has gone on for so long, we have a vet appointment scheduled later this week (fingers crossed this vet experience is better than the last one!). In the meantime, I have switched Atka to a bland diet to try and soothe his upset tummy.

This has always been my go-to tummy soothing recipe and typically works like a charm.

What You’ll Need

  • Rice (white or brown)
  • Boiled hamburger
  • No sodium added broth
  • 100% pure pumpkin
  • Probiotic powder (we like Wagglies)

Easy Preparation

After cooking your rice, ensure it is tender enough to be easily digested by your dog (err on the “mushy” side). The hamburger should be cooked to ensure it is as lean as possible. I always start with the leanest ground beef I can find and then remove excess fat during the cooking process. Some people prefer to use chicken instead of beef, but Mauja and Atka don’t always do the greatest with chicken.

Create a 3:1 ratio of rice to beef and add a small amount of broth. This is a completely optional step, but I’ve noticed that it keeps Mauja and Atka from spitting the rice to the side 😉

Next, add a spoonful of 100% pure pumpkin (ensure you don’t accidentally grab pumpkin pie mix!) to your rice and meat mixture. Finally, top of the meal with a high-quality probiotic powder to assist with overall gut health. We’ve been really liking the Wagglies probiotic powder because of the high-quality ingredients, easy to administer odorless powder, and added prebiotics to optimize the overall results.

Always start with small meals to give your dog’s stomach a bit of a chance to relax. If your dog’s stomach doesn’t start to heal in a few days or you notice other symptoms such as vomiting, weakness, or lethargy, make a vet appointment immediately. We never want to risk the health of our furbabies!

What usually works to soothe your dog’s stomach?

Toppin’ It Off With Spot Farms

September 15, 2016 12 Comments

I always try and keep things interesting for the fluffies and they've been LOVING this dehydrated food from Spot Farms. I use it as a topper for my Great Pyrenees, but it is also great as a complete, balanced meal!

Toppin’ It Off with Spot Farms

I’m always on the lookout for something new and exciting to add to the fluffies’ food. Surprisingly enough, they’re not the biggest “food dogs” and I sometimes struggle to get them to eat enough. To keep them continuously interested, we utilize a rotation diet and add various toppers to their meals.

I really love the concept of dehydrated food. It is far closer to feeding fresh food than kibble but with the ease of feeding a traditional kibble meal. However, Atka refuses to eat just dehydrated food. I think it’s a texture issue because he absolutely loves it as a topper or frozen – just not as a standalone meal. Mauja (and most dogs) don’t have any issue with the texture. Atka just has to keep me on my toes 😉

There are several dehydrated foods on the market, so how do you choose the right one for your dog?

Spot Farms Dehydrated Food

Look at that snoot in the air! Atka was a fan 🙂

After having the opportunity to try Spot Farms Dehydrated at BlogPaws, it has become an important addition to the fluffies’ food rotation. I get the “seriously, mom?” look when they don’t get Spot Farms Dehydrated with their meals. Lucky for them, I think it’s a great food so they can have it whenever they want! Here are a few reasons why I love Spot Farms Dehydrated:

  • There are grain-free formulas and formulas with grains to suit a variety of nutritional needs.
  • They have 5 different recipes so I never have to worry about Mauja and Atka getting bored.
  • It can be fed as a whole, nutritious meal or as a topper for your dog’s current food.
  • All ingredients are human grade.
  • Preparation is super easy! Add water, wait three minutes, and serve.

Spot Farms offers suggestions for how much to feed your dog based on your dog’s weight. Always remember that these numbers are approximate and will vary based on age and activity level. Use the guide as a starting point and then adjust up or down as needed!

Spot Farms Artisanal

I always try and keep things interesting for the fluffies and they've been LOVING this dehydrated food from Spot Farms. I use it as a topper for my Great Pyrenees, but it is also great as a complete, balanced meal!

After your dog has Spot Farms Dehydrated for dinner, how about a little dessert? Or you can have dessert before dinner – we don’t judge 😉 These brand new treats are seriously a fluffy hit. With flavors such as Honey Mango Chicken and Cranberry Sweet Potato Turkey, how could they not?! These have been one of my go-to, high-value training treats recently and they always get Mauja and Atka’s attention!

Spot Farms Artisanal treats are now available at Petco, which makes is super easy to grab a bag (or two or three…) during your Petco errands. Trust me – your dog will thank you. Be sure to store your opened packages in the refrigerator to keep them fresh!

Why Not Try?

What To Feed Your Giant Breed Puppy

July 27, 2015 26 Comments

Mauja at 8 weeks :)
Mauja at 8 weeks 🙂

In our society, bigger is better (just look at iPhones these days!). Unfortunately, the “bigger is better mentality” has transferred into dogs, especially giant breeds. Many people want their giant breed as big as possible, as soon as possible. I often see people exclaim proudly, “My 5 month old is already 80 pounds!” However, promoting rapid growth for a giant breed puppy is one of the most detrimental things a new dog parent can do.

Growth in giant breeds is a topic that is starting to be studied more thoroughly. The nutrition we give to a Maltese puppy surely shouldn’t be given to a Great Pyrenees puppy, but it happens all of the time. Most of the time it occurs from a simple lack of knowledge and inaccurate data from dog food companies. But just what should new giant breed puppy parents look for in a dog food?

For many years, low protein content was the recommended food strategy for giant breeds. However, that was debunked in 1991 by Nap et al. that found dry matter protein from 23% to 31% did not have an adverse effect on skeletal growth. We know now that there are two important factors when choosing a food for your giant breed puppy: overall caloric intake and calcium level. Both aspects play an important role in your puppy’s growth rate which should be kept slow to avoid developmental orthopedic diseases, such as osteochondrosis.

Osteochondrosis in dogs is noted as a disruption in endochondrial ossification that results in a focal lesion. It occurs in the physis or epiphysis of growth cartilage. When it occurs in physeal cartilage, it may cause growth abnormalities such as angular limb deformities in long bones. Osteochondrosis of the articular epiphyseal cartilage commonly occurs in the shoulder, stifle, hock and elbow. – Ed Kane, PhD

The Problem With Excess Fat & Calcium

Giant breed puppies should be kept lean as a primary risk factor for developmental orthopedic diseases (DOD) is being overweight; making calorie control essential. Most veterinary nutritionists recommend diets of giant breed puppies consist of at least 30% protein and around 9% fat. Since most commercial puppy and adult foods often contain 10 – 25% fat, it is important to thoroughly read the nutrition facts prior to choosing your puppy’s food. Most raw diets contain 20 – 40% fat which is also too high for giant breed puppies. Giant breed puppies fed a high fat, low carbohydrate diet have been shown to have a high body fat level and increased risk for DOD.

The second risk factor for DOD is a diet high in calcium and excess minerals. A high level of calcium means too high of absorption into the bone structure and furthermore, skeletal abnormalities. These include hypertrophic osteodystrophy, craniomandibular osteopathy, and lesions in the skeleton and joints. The diet of a giant breed puppy should contain approximately 1.5% (or 3 grams/1000kcal) calcium content and 0.8 – 1.0% phosphorus (make sure you include treats in that calculation).

Ensuring Optimal Growth

After finding a giant breed puppy appropriate food, the next step is ensuring an ideal body weight. First, don’t free feed. You want to ensure your puppy is getting the necessary food and not any more. Second, ignore the feeding charts on the back of the bag (especially if you have a Great Pyrenees – their metabolism is very slow). The charts are usually grossly overestimated. Instead, go by look and feel of your puppy and try to keep him/her between a 4/9 and 5/9 for Body Composition Score (click here for a detailed BCS chart). Personally, I like to keep my giant breed puppies closer to a 4/9 to keep less weight on their joints.

To Sum It Up
  • At least 30% protein
  • Approximately 9% fat
  • 1.5% calcium
  • 0.8 – 1.0% phosphorus
  • Don’t free feed
  • Keep your puppy at a 4/9 or 5/9 body composition

Feeding a giant breed puppy may be a little difficult, but don’t let it overwhelm you. You are setting the foundation for your puppy to have a long, healthy life. While we don’t want your puppy to grow too fast, enjoy the little days because they won’t last long!

Determining what to feed your giant breed puppy can be challenging. Here is what you need to know.

Fluffy BlogPaws Product Roundup

June 9, 2015 5 Comments

BlogPaws Product Roundup

BlogPaws 2015 was a complete blast. We met amazing people, chatted with fantastic brands, and learned more than my brain could handle in one weekend. I came back extremely motivated and ready to quit my day job. Then I remembered I have bills to pay, fluffies to feed, and therefore a bit of work to do before I can make that leap 😉

We received a swag bag with products from many of the sponsors, but also received product from brands that we met throughout the conference. Here are some of our favorite products from BlogPaws 2015.

1. Only Natural Pet Canine Powerfood – This stuff is seriously amazing and a recent addition to the fluffy rotation. We absolutely love products from ONP (like their salmon oil, beef tripe niblets, and Himalayan dog chews) and this food is certainly no exception. The food is fantastic quality at an even better price. You can read more about the Canine Powerfood here.

2. Full Moon Real Bacon Treats – While these treats are a bit slimy, they are a fluffy favorite. These treats are made in the USA, all natural, and free of grain, corn, wheat, and soy. I’d suggest getting two bags as you’re pup will fly through one! More on Full Moon here.

3. Primal Beef Chips – We had never tried anything from Primal, but I was very impressed with their treats. They are single source protein treats which are great for pups with food sensitivies. They also are free from preservatives and are grain/gluten free.

4. Wag More Bark Less – These treats are from Cloud Star, which create a fluffy favorite, Buddy Biscuits. This line is a crunchy treat that is free of corn, soy, and artificial flavors and colors. These treats do include grains, so they are not the best if your pooch is on a strict, grain-free diet.

5. Stella & Chewy’s Tantalizing Turkey Meal Mixers – We don’t feed raw here at It’s Dog or Nothing, but I’m not against freeze-dried raw as an addition to kibble. The meal mixers contain cage-free turkey, fruits, and vegetables and leave out anything artificial. If you are a raw feeder or simply looking to mix up your dog’s kibble, Stella & Chewy’s has some fantastic options.

6. Groom Genie – This brush definitely isn’t going to pull out the undercoat, but it is a great tool for sleeking the fur. I love the paw shape of the brush as it makes for a very comfortable grip. The brush also claims to gently massage and relax your dog during the grooming process. Mauja and Atka have enjoyed this brush so far!

7. Jones Natural Chews – We received a few products from JNC, but the Windees are a fluffy favorite. These all-natural treats are a great way for your pup to end the day. Mauja and Atka have tried several treats from Jones Natural Chews and always enjoy them (like these).

8. Dog Tag Art – These dog tags are adorable and you can even create your own. They have a vast amount of pre-created tags, but you can also upload your own image to turn into an ID tag. We’ve talked about the importance of proper pet identification, but why not do it in a cute and unique way?

9. VetriScience – We received three products from VetriScience: Perio Plus (dental chews), Composure (calming chew), and GlycoFlex (joint chew). While I’m not sure dental chews do much for my two, Mauja and Atka love the taste. While at BlogPaws, we gave Mauja the Composure chews before leaving the room. She was still very nervous, but it definitely helped to take the edge off. The joint support chews include green-lipped mussels, which are great for joints, but not typically found in joint products. After the fluffies have been on these chews for a bit, I will report back with the results.

10. Burt’s Bees Itch Soothing Spray – I love anything natural. I’d prefer to stay away from chemical as much as possible, which is why I love Burt’s Bees. This spray contains honeysuckle and is 97% natural. Atka’s back leg has been bothering him lately, and this spray has definitely been helping.

11. Dr. Harvey’s – We received Sweet Potato Chews, Biscotti for Dogs, Coconut Smiles, Power Patties, and two food pre-mixes. Mauja and Atka weren’t the biggest fans of the Coconut Smiles, but I wasn’t surprised since they won’t eat coconut oil. If your dog likes coconut, these are great! I’m really intrigued by the food mixes. You simply add meat and water to the mix to create a wonderful homemade meal for your dog. Yum!

12. Dr. Buzby’s ToeGrips – If you have a senior or special needs dog that is slipping on your floor, this is the product for you. Created by a holistic veterinarian, these grips help provide confidence, mobility, and stability to your dog. These are going to make their way to Mauja and Atka’s berner cousin, Kai.

Have you tried any of these products? If so, how was your experience? Stay tuned for more in-depth reviews on some of these products over the next few weeks. Also, look out next week for a review of our favorite product/brand from BlogPaws!
