Halloween for Dogs

October 9, 2017 3 Comments

How are you spending Halloween with your dog? Halloween can be a lot of fun or extremely stressful. We've rounded up some ways to make it a great time of year!

Halloween for Dogs

Pumpkins, and scarecrows, and skulls, oh my!

It’s officially fall here in Washington: cool in the morning and evening with a warm sun in the afternoon. While I’m a summer girl (I want things hot, hot, hot), I know the fluffies are enjoying the cooler days. Let’s be honest – when they’re happy, I’m happy.

I’m drinking hot apple cider, watching Hocus Pocus, and trying to get myself into the Halloween mood. To help push myself along, I’ve rounded up a few great Halloween posts! If you’re struggling to get festive, if you need some fun ideas, or if you’re trying to figure out how to get your dog through Halloween, check out the posts below.

I absolutely love making homemade treats for Mauja and Atka. It gives me peace of mind knowing exactly what’s in their treats, plus it makes me feel good to see them so happy. Unfortunately, coming up with treat recipes is not at all my forte (my attempted birthday cake for Mauja demonstrates that perfectly). So, I rely on other kitchen-savvy bloggers to come up with recipes for me!

We’ve rounded up some of our favorite fall-themed dog treat recipes which are perfect for any fall or Halloween festivities. All of these recipes are super easy and sure to please any dog!

Simple DIY Trick or Treat Bags for Dogs

October 10, 2016 6 Comments

Want to include your dog and their furry friends in the Halloween festivities? Try these simple DIY Trick or Treat bags for dogs.

Halloween can be a pretty rough holiday in our house. Either the doorbell is constantly ringing or there are kids are dressed ‘funny’ causing upset to Mauja and Atka. Sometimes they bark, sometimes they hide, and sometimes they have absolutely no idea what to do with themselves.

For the past few years, we haven’t participated in Trick or Treat because it’s too much stress on the dogs. We turn off all of our lights, close the blinds, and snuggle up to watch a movie or play a game. One year we even took the fluffies on an outing to get them away from the chaos.

While we might not participate in the Trick or Treat festivities, I still enjoy celebrating Halloween. Naturally, I have to do something special for the dogs! This year, I’m making DIY Trick or Treat bags for dogs to hand out to the neighborhood dogs who accompany their humans trick or treating.

Supplies

These DIY Trick or Treat bags for dogs could not be easier to make. While you can easily grab small Halloween-themed bags at the store, I wanted to incorporate a little dog into mine 😉 Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Small paper bags
  • Festive ribbon
  • A black marker
  • Plenty of tasty treats (we’re fans of these and these)

The Process

Okay, I am NOT an artist or even crafty in the slightest so don’t judge my poorly drawn bones and paw prints! Since they are fairly basic, I figured I couldn’t mess them up too bad. If you’re artsier, go crazy here! Or, do what I almost did and grab some stickers to decorate them 😉 If you have human kids, this could be a fun activity for everyone to do together.

After I drew on each bag, I added the Trick or Treat ribbon and learned that I absolutely cannot tie pretty bows. I don’t think the fluffy butts will care too much about that though!

Lastly, fill each bag with some of the treats you purchased. I chose crunchy treats because anything soft would quickly dry out in the open bags. You can find several Halloween-themed dog treats at your local pet store to fill your Trick or Treat bags.

Have you ever created Trick or Treat bags for dogs? What treats would you include?

10 Fall Activities to do with Your Dog

September 24, 2015 10 Comments

Need a few fun activities to do with your dog this fall? We have 10 great ideas for you!Since yesterday was the first day of fall (yep, I missed it), I thought we’d talk about some fun things to do with your furry friend this fall! I hate the cold am not the biggest fan of fall and really don’t enjoy pumpkin (not even the Pumpkin Spice Latte – maybe my girl gene is broken?), but Mauja and Atka love the cool air that accompanies the season change. So, just for them, I put on 18 layers bundle up and we head outside to enjoy it together. Here’s 10 things we’re hoping to do this fall:

  1. Find a dog-friendly pumpkin patch and pick pumpkins together.
  2. Take a trip to the orchard to pick some fresh apples (then make apple treats!).
  3. Enjoy the scenery and cool, crisp air with a hike in a new area.
  4. Make a pile of leaves to jump and play in.
  5. Get some exercise with some backyard football.
  6. Create/buy a fun costume for your dog; or maybe you and your dog could match costumes! (now taking suggestions for the fluffies’ Halloween apparel!)
  7. Throw a “Howl-oween” party.
  8. Bob for apples (or perhaps they would enjoy hot dogs more).
  9. Bake some pumpkin inspired treats.
  10. Attend a dog-friendly outdoor festival.

I’m reeeeally hoping I can find a dog-friendly pumpkin patch here in Montana. I searched endlessly last year, but was unsuccessful. We will definitely be hitting the trails for a few more hikes before the cold comes in just a few short months.

What are your fall plans with your dog?

We’ve been gradually reducing the dosage, and today, he had his first trim with ZERO drugs and ZERO growling 🙌🙌
