Halloween can be a pretty rough holiday in our house. Either the doorbell is constantly ringing or there are kids are dressed ‘funny’ causing upset to Mauja and Atka. Sometimes they bark, sometimes they hide, and sometimes they have absolutely no idea what to do with themselves.

For the past few years, we haven’t participated in Trick or Treat because it’s too much stress on the dogs. We turn off all of our lights, close the blinds, and snuggle up to watch a movie or play a game. One year we even took the fluffies on an outing to get them away from the chaos.

While we might not participate in the Trick or Treat festivities, I still enjoy celebrating Halloween. Naturally, I have to do something special for the dogs! This year, I’m making DIY Trick or Treat bags for dogs to hand out to the neighborhood dogs who accompany their humans trick or treating.

These DIY Trick or Treat bags for dogs could not be easier to make. While you can easily grab small Halloween-themed bags at the store, I wanted to incorporate a little dog into mine 😉 Here’s what you’ll need:

 

The Process

Okay, I am NOT an artist or even crafty in the slightest so don’t judge my poorly drawn bones and paw prints! Since they are fairly basic, I figured I couldn’t mess them up too bad. If you’re artsier, go crazy here! Or, do what I almost did and grab some stickers to decorate them 😉 If you have human kids, this could be a fun activity for everyone to do together.

After I drew on each bag, I added the Trick or Treat ribbon and learned that I absolutely cannot tie pretty bows. I don’t think the fluffy butts will care too much about that though!

Lastly, fill each bag with some of the treats you purchased. I chose crunchy treats because anything soft would quickly dry out in the open bags. You can find several Halloween-themed dog treats at your local pet store to fill your Trick or Treat bags.

Leaving Dog Fur for Birds

When the weather is nice, I prefer to brush Mauja and Atka outside. Not only do I enjoy the sunshine, but clean-up is so much easier. I pick up most of the fur because I don’t want it to blow into a neighbor’s yard and they’d definitely know it came from us! We’re the only ones with white dogs on the block 😉 However, I can just grab the larger chunks and it’s not a big deal if I leave a bit behind.

Over the years, I have seen several bird nests that were made with the fluffies’ fur. It always makes me happy to see that it’s going to good use! Recently, I was actually able to see a bird grabbing some fur for the nest. How cool?!

After seeing a bird collecting their fur, I wanted to leave more out for them; but again, I didn’t want to be “that neighbor”. I thought about leaving the fur in a bag for them, but it didn’t look good and I worried the birds wouldn’t go near it. I was out of ideas until I was wandering through Target and found the bird feeder section.

A bird feeder would work perfectly. I’d be able to hang it up for them while keeping the yard looking nice. At first, I was just going to get a simple feeder and use it only for dog fur. As I was grabbing my choice, I noticed a really cool bird feeder with wiring on the side for suet. I could put their fur in those and have food for them, too!

So, I set out to brush the fluffies. When I was finally finished, I bagged the fur and set it inside, completely meaning to put it in the bird feeder right away. Well, I got distracted and forgot, so the fur sat there all day until Nick came home.

Nick: Hey, I’m going to take the trash out. Anything you need me to take?

Me: Nope, we’re good. Wait! Is that the dog fur you’re carrying?

Nick: Uh, yeah. Why?

Me: No, no, no don’t get rid of it! I need it for the birds and I still need to take pictures for a blog post!

Nick: *laughs and rolls his eyes* I just love being married to a pet blogger!

Anyway, I put the fur in the feeder and hung it outside waiting eagerly for the first bird to appear (apparently, I thought it would be some kind of bird magnet?). When nothing appeared, I was slightly discouraged, but knew it what silly to expect a bird so quickly.

I checked the next day and…. it worked! The birds love it.

Now every time I brush Mauja and Atka, I add some more fur to the feeder. I think I’ll set up my Vimtag camera to see if I can capture a glimpse of a bird in action.

Next step – find someone to spin the fluffies’ fur and make something for me 🙂

Easy DIY Paw Print Art

I can’t believe I am doing a second DIY post in less than a month. I think that puts me at about 3 DIY posts in the past two years! I’m one of those people who wants to be crafty, but really just fails every time. However, I was pretty pleased with the result of this one.

Mauja and Atka steal the hearts of many people they meet. True to their breed, they form very strong bonds with certain people, usually their family members. However, sometimes they form an amazing bond with someone outside of their family.

This was especially true for Atka.

Atka bonded with our friend and dog trainer, Jessica. Sometimes, I think he likes her more than me! 😉 He would prance and whine when he knew we were going to visit her and could even smell if she was or wasn’t there. He completely misbehaved with her, but it was adorable.

When we found out we were moving, I knew I wanted to do something special for Jessica but couldn’t think of anything. Obviously, a picture of her and Atka would be sweet, but I didn’t feel like it was even close to representing their bond. Ultimately, I decided to create the following paw print art.

Supplies

  • Picture frame
  • Sturdy paper (I used thick, scrapbook paper)
  • Non-toxic paint
  • Stencil (if you struggle with your handwriting like I do!)
  • Paint brush
  • Favorite photo
  • A way to trim your paper to the appropriate size

How To Do It

1.Trim your paper to the appropriate size. I used a 5″ x 7″ matted frame, so that’s how large I cut my paper. Pro tip – make sure your paper is actually big enough for your dog’s paw! I started out way too small… 😉

3. While having your dog in a comfortable position (I had Atka “relax”), apply some paint to your dog’s paw pads.

5. Add your dog’s name or other text, if you’d like, to the paper. I used a stencil, but get creative!

6. Let dry for a few hours and then place in your frame.

7. Bask in the glory of your creativeness 😉

Overall, it’s a fairly easy DIY project and I’m really pleased with how the paw print art turned out. If I can do it, you can do it!

I apologize in advance for the less than stellar picture quality. This room is in pretty much the darkest area of the house and no matter what I did, I could not get good pictures!

Before Atka came home with us, I wanted to set up a “feeding area” for the dogs. While Mauja had never shown signs of food aggression, I didn’t want to take a chance with a new puppy. I did some experimenting with crates and separate areas around the house but couldn’t find an area I liked. Plus, I didn’t want things just sitting around. I wanted a dedicated dog nook.

Eventually, I decided that we really didn’t need our Harry Potter closet (the closet, or cupboard, under the stairs) for storage. I emptied it out, took out a few shelves, and turned it into a feeding area. We put up a baby gate so each dog would have their own side and set their food bowls facing opposite directions.

It worked perfectly. That is… until I decided it looked like a complete mess.

One year ago (yes, one year ago), I was inspired by some pictures on Pinterest showing super cute dog areas.

So, I decided to get creative and went to work.

Step 1: Find Your Perfect Area

For us, we had a closet under the stairs (I call it our Harry Potter closet). Maybe you have a small room, or even just a corner of a room that you want to dedicate to your dog. Just find a place that makes sense for you!

Step 2: Clean Out the Area

Even after initially turning it into a dog area, we had some random items in the closet. I moved some extraneous items to make it more of a dedicated area for Mauja and Atka. Since we had absolutely zero issues with them sharing a feeding space, I removed the baby gate to make the area seem bigger and more open.

Step 3: Organize

I really hated the clutter of the room. Since it didn’t have a door on it, there was no way to hide everything. I went looking for some cute storage bins, but they were a bit expensive and I couldn’t find any I liked. For some reason, I decided I was talented enough to create my own storage bins. After failing miserably and becoming extremely frustrated, I followed this tutorial from Namely Original.

I used some boxes we had around the house and skipped putting the fabric on the inside. I didn’t see the point since no one would really see the inside. Plus, I figured things would end up spilling or crumbling inside making it dirty anyway.

After I covered the box, I cut out some paper dog bones to use as labels. Print a template off the internet and trace! Easy peasy. I can’t even handle letter stencils (as I learned earlier this week), so if I can do it, you can do it 😉

Step 4: Decorate!

I had a lot of fun with this step! Although, I actually never finished everything I wanted to do. Perhaps once we’re in our new house, I’ll add the final touches to really complete their dog nook. There were three main things I did to decorate Mauja and Atka’s space:

Add their names to the wall. I went to Michaels, picked out some wooden letters, and painted them. Then I hung them on the wall with some adhesive strips (no nails needed – phew!) over their eating spots. I didn’t realize it until much later, but this made it super easy for anyone to feed Mauja and Atka. They always sit in front of their names, so no one will accidentally feed them the wrong amount!

Holy fluffy, they’re expensive! I found a kind of cheater DIY version that is super easy. Plus, they turned out so cute! Check out this tutorial from Designer Trapped in a Lawyer’s Body. The only thing I did differently was to paint the edges of the canvas black before adding the photo (which she points out at the end). I tried doing it in the recommended order and completely messed up my picture 😉

Eventually, I’ll go back and update them. I found some dog-themed hooks at Bed, Bath, and Beyond and loved them. For now, I think they work.
