Keeping Cool While Staying Grain-Free #GrainFreeForMe

August 4, 2016 1 Comment

Great Pyrenees | It's Dog or Nothing #grainfreeforme

Summer is here and it is HOT. While it hasn’t been overly warm here in the Pacific Northwest, it’s still warm enough to make the fluffies uncomfortable. This summer, they seem to have two favorites for keeping cool: splashing in their pool and enjoying a frozen treat.

Baby Pool for Dogs

I absolutely love getting the baby pool out for Mauja and Atka. Atka hops in the pool as soon as I turn on the hose and waits for the water to fill around him. Mauja prefers to wait until the pool is full before she hops in to cool off.

IMG_8401

While Atka will lay down in the pool, Mauja prefers to just splash around (or use it as a massive water bowl). However, they both love to dig in the water. If your dog is fond of water, does he dig in the pool, too? I’m always thankful we have a plastic pool that they can’t tear easily with their nails!

Check out Atka’s digging action!

Wellness Grain-Free Frozen Treats

Fillable treat toys are a great way to keep your dog busy, but freezing them makes them last so much longer. Recently, they have been enjoying their treat toys stuffed with Wellness CORE wet food or Wellness Complete Health Grain-Free dry food and some sodium-free chicken broth, wet food, or a little cottage cheese.

Since Mauja and Atka’s tummies can be pretty sensitive, I prefer to fill their treat toys with foods they’re already used to. Plus, it’s a great way to ensure they are eating in the warm summer months. It’s not uncommon for pyrs to lose weight in the summer due to an unwillingness to eat. While I haven’t checked Atka’s weight, Mauja is down about 10 pounds which is consistent with previous years. As fall comes around, she’ll regain the lost weight. Offering frozen food encourages them to eat ensuring they receive the nutrients their bodies need.

Waiting… patiently?

Preparing your dog’s frozen treat toy with wet food couldn’t be easier. Simply grab your toy, stuff, and freeze! I like to shove some treats at the end for them to work toward – it’s like a prize at the bottom of the box.

Our second method of using dry food and broth can be a bit trickier, but it’s still a simple process. The biggest struggle is making sure the broth doesn’t leak out of the bottom of the toy until it freezes. I’ve found a treat that fits perfectly into the opening in Mauja and Atka’s treat toys which keeps at least 95% of the broth in. If you use this method, just be sure to remove the treat at the end before giving the toy to your dog to prevent it from suctioning to your dog’s tongue (always use treat toys with at least two openings).

Great Pyrenees | It's Dog or Nothing #grainfreeforme

The combination of a baby pool and frozen treats does an excellent job at keeping the fluffies cool. I’m waiting for the day that Atka takes his treat into the pool with him 😉

Thanks again to our awesome sponsor, Wellness Pet Food, for supporting our phenomenal trip to #BlogPaws!

Surviving Events with an Anxious Dog

Surviving Events with an Anxious Dog

As Mauja has matured, her anxiety has become worse and worse. Even with extensive socialization and training, we were never able to stay a step ahead. It seemed like whenever we started to make progress, we’d immediately be set back by some unknown factor.

Mauja’s anxiety was a huge consideration during our preparations for BlogPaws. Before we were completely sure of Nick’s work schedule, we thought that I may have to do the road trip alone. In that case, only Atka would have attended BlogPaws with me. It simply would have been too much for Mauja.

When Nick found out he would be able to take off work, I knew taking both of the pups would work for us. Nick wasn’t going to be attending many of the sessions, which would give Mauja ample time to relax in the hotel room with him. I figured Mauja could make brief appearances, especially since she loves people and other dogs so much. As long as we limited her time and kept her from getting overwhelmed, I figured we would be fine.

Great Pyrenees

I failed to consider the severity of the added stress of the move. For an entire month, Mauja and Atka never stayed in one place for more than a week; most of the time it was just a night. By the time we got to BlogPaws, they were both a bit on edge. I can’t blame them – I definitely was too!

High-Value Treats

For any large event, I’m always prepared with a “trail mix” filled treat bag. Mauja and Atka will get bored of the same treat extremely quickly, so I toss about 4 or 5 different treats in the bag. A few of their favorites are the Green Beef Tripe Nibblets, All Meat Bites (a new one we tried at BlogPaws and they went NUTS for!), Wellness Pure Rewards, and WellBites. I also tossed in some of the Wellness CORE Air-Dried food for more high-stress situations. I usually use this as a food topper, but they absolutely love it so it makes a great training treat as well!

Overall, Atka was his usual rock-solid self. He did bark a few times when he saw other dogs, but it was his normal excitement barking. As an adolescent, we’re still working on impulse control! Mauja definitely had a rough time, but I was really proud of how she did. There were a few random snarly incidents – things that wouldn’t normally bother her, but after giving her a brief break from the commotion she settled down. She even went to the exhibit hall with me!

Great Pyrenees

If you’re going to take an anxious dog to a large and/or stressful event – be prepared. We brought VetriScience Composure calming chews to take the edge off and planned for frequent breaks. I can’t even begin to imagine what such a large and stimulating event is like for a dog; I was even overwhelmed at times! We also always had a full treat bag on us. When Mauja would show early signs of anxiety, we would first attempt to distract her attention by playing basic “leave it” and “focus” games with her. This tactic usually works really well.

The most important thing to remember is that just like we aren’t perfect, dogs aren’t perfect either, and it’s crazy to expect them to be. Dogs have their own unique personalities and have a right to express them. While I will continue working with Mauja to lower her stress levels, she really is just a canine introvert. Nothing makes her happier than curling up on the couch with her family <3

Wellness-Inspired BlogPaws Highlights

It has been one crazy month, but we are finally home and beginning to get settled in. All of our household goods arrived yesterday, so it was the perfect time to get home from BlogPaws. While BlogPaws came and went far too quickly, we had an absolute blast and can’t thank our sponsor, Wellness, enough for the amazing opportunity.

Wellness VIP Breakfast

Great Pyrenees and Wellness Pet Food at BlogPaws 2016

If I’m being completely honest, there were a few things we were looking forward to more than others during the BlogPaws conference. One event we were really looking forward to (but had to keep hush hush about for awhile) was the Wellness VIP breakfast!

Over the past three months, It’s Dog or Nothing, along with several other amazing bloggers, has been participating in the #GrainFreeForMe Wellness campaign. Wellness recently debuted their new grain-free Complete Health line and we were extremely eager to try it out. So far, I have nothing but positive things to say about the fluffies’ experience on the food. The VIP breakfast was an opportunity for us to finally meet the other participating bloggers in person.

Not only did Wellness provide us with a delicious breakfast and copious amounts of oh so necessary coffee, but we also left with swag bags full of Wellness products. Atka wasted no time in seeking out his new tennis ball and searching for someone to feed him some treats.

The Wellness Booth

Great Pyrenees and Wellness Pet Food at BlogPaws 2016

We made frequent trips into the exhibit hall to meet new friends, but Atka always made sure we visited the Wellness booth before making any other stops. He knew a trip to their booth meant treats and belly rubs – what more could a dog ask for? It didn’t matter what else was going on; Atka pulled me directly to the Wellness booth every time.

If you stopped to visit Wellness, I’m sure you saw their fun, Instagram-inspired photobooth. We tried to get both fluffies to pose behind the Instagram cut out, but poor Mauja was absolutely terrified of it. Thankfully, Atka didn’t seem to mind 😉 If you got a picture at the Wellness booth, be sure to share it with us on social media – we’d love it see it!

The Wellness Experience

I know that BlogPaws can get pretty crazy, so if you attended the conference and didn’t make it to the Wellness booth, please let me know! Wellness had some samples of their awesome, new and improved, grain-free Complete Health line. We’ve been loving the food and know your dog (or cat!) will find a Wellness product that suits their specific needs. Let us help you find that perfect formula!

Don’t forget – you can search #OperationDesertFluffies on Instagram for all our fun BlogPaws pictures! If you attended BlogPaws, did you get a chance to stop by the Wellness booth and grab some samples?

Sticking to a Schedule During the Move

June 27, 2016 Leave a Comment

Great Pyrenees

As you well know, things have been absolutely crazy for us recently. We just moved to Washington and almost immediately after getting the keys to our new home, we hit the road for BlogPaws.

In the past month, Mauja and Atka have been in 8 different hotels/homes. Talk about a lot! I can’t even begin to tell you how proud of them I’ve been. While they’re stressed and a bit clingy, we haven’t had any issues. No random snarkiness, no destruction, and no throwing up from stress (Mauja has done that a few times).

Atka still won’t let us leave him alone, but after we get our household goods and settle in for a week or two, we’ll begin to work on that. Their life has been far too hectic recently for me to expect him to be okay with us leaving. For now, Nick and I just take turns going places or the fluffies travel with us. Their schedule is completely thrown off!

Atka likes a schedule. He is the most routine-driven dog I have ever met. He clings to a schedule and gets visibly upset and confused when you attempt to change it on him. Moving his blanket five feet to the left from its normal spot is a huge no-no!

Being in 8 different ‘homes’, we really haven’t been able to give him the routine he prefers. However, we have tried to keep their overall schedule the same. I think this has really helped Mauja as well.

They still eat at the same times, we go outside at the same times, and they get their daily walk like they’re used to. Keeping all of these things the same has definitely helped them from going absolutely insane during all this travel!

While initially I was more worried about Mauja’s anxiety during the move, Atka has had the tougher time. Mauja is clingy and wants to be where we are, but we can leave the house without any issues. For the most part, she just sleeps all day.

Atka, however, has been much more stressed. He’s not quite as clingy when we’re home (although he does try to make sure he can always see us), but he absolutely will not let us leave him. Before we got the house keys, we were just hanging out in the backyard to pass time. I went out of the gate to grab something from the car and Atka lost it – barking, crying, and pawing at the gate. He was not a happy camper!

Moving and traveling with two giant breed dogs definitely hasn’t been easy, but I wouldn’t have it any other way <3

The Fluffies Have an Announcement…

SponsorDisclaimer2In less than 2 weeks, we will be hitting the road for BlogPaws. If you aren’t familiar BlogPaws is an absolutely AMAZING pet blogging conference. This 3-day conference is pet-friendly and packed full of great information. Last year, we attended for the first time and had a blast. We met tons of amazing people and brands and were completely exhausted by the end of it.

It was so worth it.

Since we had such a blast, I knew we had to come back for the 2016 BlogPaws Conference. With us being mid-move, things have been a bit crazy, but I knew we had to go. I was super excited, but became absolutely ecstatic when this arrived in my inbox:

Wellness is interested in sponsoring your trip to BlogPaws so that you can be an onsite Ambassador for them.

Say what, now?

I’m not going to lie – I may have let out a squeal when I read the email, which, of course, caused Mauja and Atka to bark.

I just pretended they were cheering along with me 😉

No, I wasn’t excited that someone was going to provide financial support for It’s Dog or Nothing (but I’d be lying if I said that wasn’t an added perk!). I was excited to create a deeper partnership with a brand we’ve been dedicated to for quite some time.

If you’ve been following us for awhile, you know that we love, love, love Wellness products – we’ve talked about them so many times! Wellness has always been my first recommendation when asked for dog food information (I know many of you can vouch for that!). Not only is Wellness food a staple to Mauja and Atka’s rotation diet, but the WellBites and TruFood CocoChia Bakes are two of their favorite treats.

We have several Wellness products in their rotation diet, but currently, two of their favorites are the CORE Ocean formula and the grain-free Complete Health Whitefish and Menhaden Fish Meal recipe. The new grain-free Complete Health line has helped eliminate Atka’s itchies and settle Mauja’s tummy. I really can’t say enough good things about our experience with the products from Wellness.

If you are coming to BlogPaws (you really should – more info here!), make sure you stop by the Wellness booth for a #GrainFreeForMe photo booth and tons of giveaways and prizes. We’ll be spending a lot of time there and the fluffies are always demanding snuggles!

The fluffies with the Wellness girls at BlogPaws last year. Best friends!

It’s Dog or Nothing will also be giving away a year’s worth of dog food to another blogger at BlogPaws. If you are interested in the Complete Health line, come chat with us and you might be the lucky winner!

I cannot even begin to say how thrilled I am to have the opportunity to work more closely with Wellness. I have seen Mauja and Atka thrive on their products over the past few years and know other dogs will have the same experience.

Has your dog tried Wellness products? Will you be attending BlogPaws? Let us know in the comments!

Dog Blogger BlogPaws Failure

June 10, 2015 20 Comments

For being a dog blogger, I completely failed at the “taking pictures” portion of BlogPaws. I was so focused on making sure Atka was behaving that I completely let it slide. Thankfully, so many people got pictures of them with new friends so I have been able to see some that way. I don’t have many pictures, but I will share a few gems today!

Mauja and Atka fell in love with the Wellness girls.

Fluffy BlogPaws Product Roundup

BlogPaws Product Roundup

BlogPaws 2015 was a complete blast. We met amazing people, chatted with fantastic brands, and learned more than my brain could handle in one weekend. I came back extremely motivated and ready to quit my day job. Then I remembered I have bills to pay, fluffies to feed, and therefore a bit of work to do before I can make that leap 😉

We received a swag bag with products from many of the sponsors, but also received product from brands that we met throughout the conference. Here are some of our favorite products from BlogPaws 2015.

1. Only Natural Pet Canine Powerfood – This stuff is seriously amazing and a recent addition to the fluffy rotation. We absolutely love products from ONP (like their salmon oil, beef tripe niblets, and Himalayan dog chews) and this food is certainly no exception. The food is fantastic quality at an even better price. You can read more about the Canine Powerfood here.

2. Full Moon Real Bacon Treats – While these treats are a bit slimy, they are a fluffy favorite. These treats are made in the USA, all natural, and free of grain, corn, wheat, and soy. I’d suggest getting two bags as you’re pup will fly through one! More on Full Moon here.

3. Primal Beef Chips – We had never tried anything from Primal, but I was very impressed with their treats. They are single source protein treats which are great for pups with food sensitivies. They also are free from preservatives and are grain/gluten free.

4. Wag More Bark Less – These treats are from Cloud Star, which create a fluffy favorite, Buddy Biscuits. This line is a crunchy treat that is free of corn, soy, and artificial flavors and colors. These treats do include grains, so they are not the best if your pooch is on a strict, grain-free diet.

5. Stella & Chewy’s Tantalizing Turkey Meal Mixers – We don’t feed raw here at It’s Dog or Nothing, but I’m not against freeze-dried raw as an addition to kibble. The meal mixers contain cage-free turkey, fruits, and vegetables and leave out anything artificial. If you are a raw feeder or simply looking to mix up your dog’s kibble, Stella & Chewy’s has some fantastic options.

6. Groom Genie – This brush definitely isn’t going to pull out the undercoat, but it is a great tool for sleeking the fur. I love the paw shape of the brush as it makes for a very comfortable grip. The brush also claims to gently massage and relax your dog during the grooming process. Mauja and Atka have enjoyed this brush so far!

7. Jones Natural Chews – We received a few products from JNC, but the Windees are a fluffy favorite. These all-natural treats are a great way for your pup to end the day. Mauja and Atka have tried several treats from Jones Natural Chews and always enjoy them (like these).

8. Dog Tag Art – These dog tags are adorable and you can even create your own. They have a vast amount of pre-created tags, but you can also upload your own image to turn into an ID tag. We’ve talked about the importance of proper pet identification, but why not do it in a cute and unique way?

9. VetriScience – We received three products from VetriScience: Perio Plus (dental chews), Composure (calming chew), and GlycoFlex (joint chew). While I’m not sure dental chews do much for my two, Mauja and Atka love the taste. While at BlogPaws, we gave Mauja the Composure chews before leaving the room. She was still very nervous, but it definitely helped to take the edge off. The joint support chews include green-lipped mussels, which are great for joints, but not typically found in joint products. After the fluffies have been on these chews for a bit, I will report back with the results.

10. Burt’s Bees Itch Soothing Spray – I love anything natural. I’d prefer to stay away from chemical as much as possible, which is why I love Burt’s Bees. This spray contains honeysuckle and is 97% natural. Atka’s back leg has been bothering him lately, and this spray has definitely been helping.

11. Dr. Harvey’s – We received Sweet Potato Chews, Biscotti for Dogs, Coconut Smiles, Power Patties, and two food pre-mixes. Mauja and Atka weren’t the biggest fans of the Coconut Smiles, but I wasn’t surprised since they won’t eat coconut oil. If your dog likes coconut, these are great! I’m really intrigued by the food mixes. You simply add meat and water to the mix to create a wonderful homemade meal for your dog. Yum!

12. Dr. Buzby’s ToeGrips – If you have a senior or special needs dog that is slipping on your floor, this is the product for you. Created by a holistic veterinarian, these grips help provide confidence, mobility, and stability to your dog. These are going to make their way to Mauja and Atka’s berner cousin, Kai.

Have you tried any of these products? If so, how was your experience? Stay tuned for more in-depth reviews on some of these products over the next few weeks. Also, look out next week for a review of our favorite product/brand from BlogPaws!

The BlogPaws Experience

May 29, 2015 18 Comments

Oh my. I am EXHAUSTED.

If you’re an introvert, you will completely understand. The constant people and interactions can be a bit overwhelming. However, don’t get me wrong, I’m having an awesome time.

My first BlogPaws.

Atka snoozing away during a session. He sure learned a lot... ;)
Atka snoozing away during a session. He sure learned a lot… 😉

I kind of feel like I’m fangirling around celebrities. Getting to meet the bloggers I’ve followed for the past year and that I admire so much has been amazing. I’m incredibly lucky to have this opportunity.

Not to mention the vast amount of brands that are attending the event. I’m getting to put faces to the people that I have had the privilege to work with and those I hope to work with in the future. You really can’t ask for a better opportunity!

I’ve already learned so much and I can’t wait to see what the rest of the weekend holds. Make sure you’re following us on social media to keep up with the current happenings! I’ll be posting pictures all weekend.

Spoiler alert: Atka met a ferret.
