Pyrenees Soccer Game

May 30, 2014 30 Comments

This post may contain affiliate links. You won't pay a penny more, but you'll help keep It's Dog or Nothing running (websites are expensive!) and the floofs fed (they're even more expensive - as you well know) ;)

Do you like to keep active with your dogs? Great Pyrenees aren’t typically running dogs, but we love going on long walks and hikes. Sometimes, we want to get a more vigorous workout with our dogs and they can always use it too! So what do we do?

Play soccer!

Mauja and Atka prefer playing soccer in different ways, so we alternate to keep them both running. Mauja likes playing soccer with an actual soccer ball. Atka just chases her around.

MaujaSoccer

Doesn’t she look so proud that she got the ball? She always delicately carries her treasure over to a shady corner and relaxes. Atka prefers to play soccer with a smaller, yellow squeaky ball.

AtkaSoccer

He’s always just as proud when he makes his catch! Although, he’s not quite as delicate. He like to squeak, squeak, squeak away! Mauja knows it’s important to take plenty of water breaks when playing.

We played soccer with the pups for about an hour (minus me taking a few photo breaks). By the end, we were all exhausted and got a great workout while having a blast. We all decided to drink some water and relax in the shade. This definitely wore the dogs out more than our typical walk and it was really good for them to get running (and us too!). As long as the dogs keep enjoying it, we will continue playing soccer with them for a good workout.

What an excellent workout. Soccer is a great way for everyone to get some exercise. Thanks for the reminder about keeping hydrated too, so important in the summer, especially with big furry guys like yours! Thanks for joining the Hop.

That sounds cute! They won’t try and dribble, but they will try to defend the ball!

Glad you find enjoyment in it too! We tried frisbee today. Atka wasn’t quite sure, but Mauja was chasing after every throw 🙂

My huskies love playing soccer with us as well!
They refuse to fetch a ball most of the time, but when we kick around the soccer ball, they just have a ball!

They are actually able to handle the heat very well. They have an undercoat that helps to keep them cool. Even when it’s 100 + degrees out, they don’t want to be inside!

What great fun! It reminds me a bit of our game of VolleyDog, which is our insanity dog Mort plinging a large (very light) ball off of his face. I should see if he would keep a soccer ball on the ground… we’ll have to try this one, indeed.

I have such a soft spot for dogs with soccer balls. We’ve graduated to Jolly Balls now, but our first dog was OBSESSED with soccer balls.

Wow, that is a great idea to get everyone to be more active. My dog would LOVE this. He is a retrieving/ball-obsessed nut! He would be really tired after about 10 minutes.

Excellent blog! Do you have any suggestions for aspiring writers?

I’m hoping to start my own blog soon but I’m a little lost on everything.
Would you recommend starting with a free platform like WordPress or
go for a paid option? There are so many options out there that I’m completely overwhelmed ..
    Any tips? Thanks!
