Dog food.
Natural, organic, grain free, raw, freeze dried…
Is there anything more confusing?
I prefer to make sure Mauja and Atka aren’t limited to one type of food. Mauja tends to get bored pretty easily and I don’t blame her. Why would she want to eat the same food day in and day out? It’s my goal to ensure that the pups get plenty of healthy variety, but I definitely have my favorites for them.
My current favorite?
pawTree.
The concept behind pawTree is simply genius. Do all dogs have the same nutritional needs? No. Even my two of the same breed (and similar age) have extremely different needs.
When I was given the opportunity to try pawTree, I immediately knew that I wanted to try it out for Mauja. She is the picky one, the one with the sensitive tummy, and the one that needs to gain a bit of weight. I headed over to fill out the ‘pet profile’ for Mauja.
This pet profile is no joke, guys. It asks the obvious necessities: breed, age, weight, and gender. The options get more complex as it asks you to select your dog’s allergens (or simply foods you would like to avoid) and any issues your dog might have (tarter, tummy issues, dry skin, etc.).
I entered all of the information for Mauja and it sent me to a page with her recommended food, treats, and other supplements. I immediately read through the ingredient list in the food and was very pleased. There are several ingredients I make sure to avoid and none of them were included in this formula.
The formulas are all developed by veterinarians to ensure that your dog is getting adequate nutrients. The food is made in the USA, includes real meat as the first ingredient, and is free of by-products, artificial anything, corn, wheat, and soy.
I haven’t even told you the best part about this food!
Remember how I said that the food is completely customized for you dog? I wasn’t lying.
I’m a sucker for packaging. The packaging doesn’t sell it for me, but it is icing on the cake. Look how adorable the label is on the bag! I was able to upload my own picture of Mauja and decide on a name for her food. Honestly, this is my favorite part!
Now, I don’t think it is possible for any food to be ‘pyrfect’, but this one is pretty close. There are two downsides:
- The Price – Like most of us, I’m not made of money. I do, however, spend as much as I can to ensure my pups are getting quality nutrition. We don’t skimp on them. This food is a tad pricey, but in my opinion, it’s worth it. Customized food isn’t easy to come by!
- The Size – Now, I’m sure this doesn’t apply to many of you, but if you have a giant breed dog, you know exactly what I’m talking about. This kibble is small. Less than half the size of most large breed kibble. I’m 100% positive they could snort these pieces up their noses. So far, we haven’t had any issues with the kibble size, but I could see it causing problems for some dogs. I would recommend that pawTree increase the kibble size for the large dog formulas.
I am beyond thrilled with this food. I love that I was able to ‘create’ a formula that was specific to Mauja’s needs. Even better? Mauja loves it!
In case you were wondering, all of these photos are of Atka. Mauja refuses to model for me so she just gets to sit back and wait for the taste test 😉

Wow! This sounds great!!!
I’ll have to check it out! Thanks for sharing!
ღ husky hugz ღ frum our pack at Love is being owned by a husky!
I’m sure you completely understand that even within the same breed, dogs have different needs!
Wow, how cool! None of us are very picking but having our name and pic on the package is priceless! Thanks for sharing!
It really is! I was like a kid on Christmas when I opened the box.
Thanks for a great review! I get boring very soon too and we have to try another food. I like the name on the bag, that’s really like made just for you!
Maybe another one to add into your rotation!
Glad you found something you like so much. We don’t have it tracked in our database yet, but will get it added.
Awesome! I can’t wait to see its SlimDoggy rating.
Atka looks gorgeous!!! I really like you kibble-paw as well 🙂
Thank you for the review of the Paw Tree dog food ~ it sounds very interesting, and I especially like the fact that they don’t use any artificial ingredients or by-products. Well, actually I was wondering about those ~ I only saw that they don’t use any “chicken by-products”..does that mean that they use other by-products? That would be the only issue I’d have trying out their food!
Love the customizable dog food bags, of course, that’s very unique and something I definitely haven’t seen before.
Can you give me some insight into their prices? I wasn’t able to find out about those without having to create a pet profile first.
Thank you!
Barbara
I’m almost positive that they don’t use any by-products. There isn’t any in the recipe that Mauja is eating. When it shows you your recommended product, you have the ability to read through the ingredients to make sure it’s to your liking. There’s one ingredient (dried beet pulp) that pyrs are particularly sensitive too, so I’m a label reading fanatic!
As far as the price, I would assume that it varies based on the recipe, but Mauja’s was $42.99 for a 10.3 pound bag. They do have larger bags, but as I was provided the small trial bag, I’m not 100% sure what the pricing for that would be. You can also choose an auto ship schedule so you don’t have to worry about ordering food every month!
Ok, right now we pay about $80 for a 30 lb bag, so it’s not that far off..thank you!
Oh sweet, I think the packaging would make me jump for joy like a little kid. It’s just so much more special to see it personalized like that. Bad Mauja for refusing to model LOL.
I know, right?! Maybe if someone other than me tells her that, she’ll listen 😉
I have to say I love the idea of customized dog food. It’s definitely something to think about, and the personalization is definitely a bonus!
If nothing else, it gets 5 stars for cuteness, right?! 😉
I am a dog food nerd and this looks so interesting. Thanks for a great review!
Glad I’m not the only one 😉
Sounds like an interesting food. We soak our kibble so size usually isn’t an issue.
We did that when Mauja and Atka were little, but they just look at me crazy if I try something like that now. Do you do it to enhance the taste?
I have being seeing a couple of reviews of this food lately and think it’s pretty cool! And great posing Atka. Love the paw print of food. Such a cute idea for a photo!
Thanks! I’m not the most creative person, but I try 😉
I love the raw diet but am still fairly new to it and learning, so pawtree would make my life SO much easier! Will definitely be looking into this product, thank you for such a detailed review!
Great review and fabulous photo shoot, I love the kibble paw print idea!
uh, that labeling is fantastic!!
I love that kibble paw!
I’ve heard about this food for the last little while. Glad to see a review on it.
“Mauja’s Munchies” – Love it!
Hi! Do you still feed Pawtree food to your pup? I’m curious because I came across this post but see its from several years back. Thank you!
