Keep It Cool with The Green Pet Shop

June 3, 2015 32 Comments

The Green Pet Shop - Cool Pet Pad

A few weeks ago I shared a picture of Atka panting away in the house. We had an unusual rise in temperature and the poor guy was so hot that I had to turn on the air conditioning for him. The Green Pet Shop recognized Atka’s problem and came to the rescue.

Or so I thought.

Yesterday, I told you that Atka is the weirdest dog ever. Well, turns out he and Mauja are both weird. My giant guard dogs are chickens.

Yep. Chickens.

When we received the Cool Pet Pad, I eagerly ripped open the box and placed the pad on the floor. I put my hands on the pad and immediately felt the cool sensation. I called Mauja and Atka over to check it out and they were terrified. Absolutely terrified. Mauja even barked at the pet pad intruder.

Well shoot.

Thus began the desensitization process. I knew the pad would be pyrfect if I could just get them to relax on it. I used a form of shaping (more on this soon) and over the course of a few weeks, they were now choosing to sleep on the pad without the reinforcement of a treat. Hooray!

Green Pet Shop - Cool Pet Pad

The Cool Pet Pad from The Green Pet Shop is an amazing product. A cooling sensation is activated when your dog lies down on the pad through a non-toxic gel. The pad absorbs body heat from your dog in order to keep him cool for up to four hours. I absolutely love that electricity is not required for the pad to work. This makes it far more portable (and better for a dog that likes to chew cords!). After a period of non-use, the pad then cools itself down. For a supercharged cooling effect, you can put the pad in a fridge for a cooler and longer lasting bed!

The Cool Pet Pad is extremely versatile. It fits wonderfully in a crate, on your dog’s bed, in the car, or in your dog’s favorite napping spot. If it gets a bit dirty, some mild soap and water will do the trick. The pad is very well constructed and durable; I can see it lasting for many years to come.

Green Pet Shop - Cool Pet Pad

With summer upon us, don’t you think your dog needs a Cool Pet Pad?

* Atka is on the extra large Cool Pet Pad which measures 45 x 27.5. It is a little too small for him, but he doesn’t seem to mind!

Those cooling pads can be scary. I mean, how did the floor get so cold when I was so hot. I have a bed that has a cooling pad in it and i love it now that I got used to it.
    The chicken poodle. 🙂

We have a similar cooling pad but I haven’t taken it out of the box yet for The Ginger Sisters to try. Since they both enjoy laying on the hot concrete in direct sunlight, I don’t know how interested they are in staying cool! The fluffies clearly enjoy it, though!

Right?! I’m going to try and get people to use this product rather than shave their double coated breeds.

I thought my dogs were the only ones who have to bark at every new object, even new toys, that some into the house. We have never heard of cooling pads but they sound like they would be great for furry dogs.

Mauja barks at everything new, then leaps 10 feet in the air when I move it 😉

That sounds like a great pad to have around -especially in the summer. I have to imagine that it can get really hot for long haired dog like your two pups. It was great seeing you guys at BlogPaws!

I should look into getting one of these for Felix. I made him a glass dog bed to help him stay cool, but this sounds pretty fab too.

Harley needs this! He is always so hot as the outside temps rise. I love the idea of putting it in the fridge for an extra cool sensation. AND its big enough for our big boys!

I love our cooling pad! Luna was very unsure of it too at first, but it has been great for camping trips! Hers is quite a bit smaller though 😉

Thank you so much for the kind words! The silliest things will scare them, but thankfully they take to desensitization very well 🙂

Oh that is so weird! It never occurred to me that the feel of it might be scary! I really want one for my Husky. Great review, thanks! Smart move to desensitize vs. giving up on the mat.

That sounds like a great product! Isn’t it funny what things dogs will decide they’re going to be afraid of? Then sometimes they’re not afraid of something you expect them to be! They like to keep us guessing. 🙂

We have this chill mat and take it with us to trials in the summer to help keep our boy cooler and his energy up.

MrJackFreckles would enjoy that on hot days when he is panting so much he goes and lies down on the hard kitchen floor. And we even have A/C.
On the other paw, he also likes to go and bake himself on the concrete sidewalk in direct sun:)
What a silly dude he is. He bark when things are not in the ‘right spot’…or at new things if they are large and seemingly a threat to him…like the concrete buffalo in the neighbor’s yard, and the other neighbor’s kids toys left outside, etc. Sheesh! Growlmy says he is just being observant:)

I’ve been thinking of getting something like this for Honey when we move aboard the boat. I’d be curious to know how long the cooling effects lasts (both in a single rest period or over the months). Will you do a follow up?
