Fur That Shines (Bright Like a Diamond)
*sings* Shine bright like a diamond!
No? Not into Rhianna? Okay, we’ll move on 😉
If there’s one thing that everyone comments on about Great Pyrenees, it’s their beautiful, thick coat. A well-maintained pyr coat is soft and fluffy and you just want to snuggle right into it. Their bright white color is striking and always turns heads. While a pyr coat is self-cleaning, you need to do a bit more if you really want the coat to shine.
The self-cleaning coat of a Great Pyrenees is truly amazing. Unlike most coats, it does not hold dirt. This means that if a pyr gets a bit muddy, he really doesn’t need a bath. If you let the mud dry, the dirt will just flake off and the rest can be brushed out.
Easy peasy.
Due to their awesome coat, the Great Pyrenees only needs to be bathed every 3-4 months. Doing so more frequently can strip the natural oils and hinder its ability to stay clean. Since the fluffies only get baths a few times a year, we make sure each bath provides the best quality care for their coats. (Throughout the rest of the month, I’m going to be showcasing a few of our favorite products. Make sure you check back for the giveaways!)
When Mauja was a puppy, I never used conditioner on her fur. Her puppy fur was naturally floofy and well-conditioned – and honestly, I didn’t even think about it. One day when out and about, we ended up coming home with some conditioner. I have literally no idea what prompted me to purchase it.
I won’t go back to my sans conditioner days.
While their coats are nice and soft normally, the conditioner adds a whole new glisten. Their coats shine and glow beautifully and their fur is softer than I imagined possible.
Over the past few years, we’ve been trying out some different shampoos and conditioners and so far, this is my favorite.

Love reading your blog and Facebook posts.
my biggest grooming struggle is cutting my dogs nails!
Me too Alicia… my girl needs to be at the vets and sedated….maybe she was a kardashian in a previous life?
That’s a tough one for Mauja, too. I accidentally nicked her dew claw once and she hasn’t forgiven me for it 😉 We’re working on it though!
How often did you bathe them as puppies compared to adults? Have a 11 week old! 🙂 doing every other week right now (still potty training), but when can they start every few months? Thx!
I bathed a lot when we were still potty training, too. Around 6 months, the adult coat should start to come in for your puppy. At that point, it’s best to go by feel and look. I’d say that I didn’t start bathing Mauja and Atka every few months until they were about 8ish months old.
On of my two pups Nala broken coat so she has wired and smooth fur and my other terrier Cody is rough coat so their fur is naturally not soft and has to be hand stripped which is the most challenging part of their grooming but it makes the new hair growth great so its worth it.
My biggest struggle in my long haired dog who licks himself constantly causing mats all over which are very difficult to brush out.
