There are two things I do when a company approaches me about reviewing their dog food.
- Head to the website to read the ingredients and get an overall feel for the brand.
- Check the ratings on Dog Food Advisor.
I’m a sucker for good packaging, but the packaging on Brothers Complete left a lot to be desired. I honestly wasn’t sure if I wanted to continue when I saw the packaging. After I reminded myself that I really shouldn’t feel that way, I pressed forward and read the ingredients.
I was very impressed so I headed to Dog Food Advisor for validation. They gave Brothers Complete a 5 star rating. As they say, it’s what’s on the inside that matters!
Brothers Complete offers four different formulas: Chicken & Egg, Lamb & Egg, Turkey & Egg, and Venison & Egg. The varying proteins makes this food great for dogs with different sensitivities or following a rotation diet. As you can see, all of the formulas contain eggs, an ingredient that you don’t often see in dog food.
Eggs are nature’s “perfect protein”. Eggs contain all 22 amino acids and are the only protein source that is 100% bioavailable, meaning the body uses it completely. When looking at the protein content of your dog’s food, it’s important to look beyond the percentage to the actual protein sources. For example, a food that has a high amount of protein but lists poultry by-product meal as a top ingredient contains very little usable protein. Brothers Complete uses eggs to supplement the already high-quality, usable protein sources in their formulas.
All lines are grain and white potato free as these are two ingredients that are typically an issue for dogs. Many brands have substituted potatoes for grains in their recipe, but potatoes have a very high glycemic index. This means that every time your dog eats, there is a spike in blood sugar that puts stress on the adrenal and pancreatic systems.
Not only does Brothers Complete include high-quality ingredients, but they ensure the food is then stored in the best way possible. Unlike most dog foods that sit in hot warehouses for an unknown amount of time until sold, Brothers Complete foods are manufactured in small batches and stored in a dark, air-conditioned facility to maintain freshness and nutritional bioavailability.
The taste test is always something I worry about. Mauja and Atka (well, mostly Atka) can be a bit particular about their food. They tend to get set in their ways – pretty common for Great Pyrenees! I was super impressed that not only did they want to eat it, but I was able to use it as a treat while they posed for pictures. Now that is definitely out of the ordinary for them!
Brothers Complete also offers a line of high-quality dog treats. These include various bully sticks, biscuits, dehydrated chicken and sweet potato, and several others. Mauja and Atka were particularly pleased with the variety of treats!
I really impressed with the quality of the food from Brothers Complete and Mauja and Atka give it 8 paws up!
Would you try Brothers Complete for your dog?
what a super review! I bet that was a challenge to place that treats on your paws and to wait till you can eat it :o) well done :o)
That’s why he had to be so focused 😉
We no longer feed kibble as we made the switch to raw 3 months ago, but this particular kibble sounds like a high-quality one. It’s awesome to read that you do exactly what I used to do when looking into new brands of kibble for the pups ~ checking out the ingredient list on the company’s website, followed by checking out their rating on the Dog Food Advisor 😉 Another thing I used to do was to browse google for any recalls.
I’m really not into the raw feeding (although I do like to give them Bravo or Stella & Chewy’s every now and then), but I do try and give them the best possible! 🙂
I love hearing about high-quality pet food, and this one sounds like it fits in that category. The storage process, along with the small batches, is impressive and an additional plus. Mauja and Atka, you’ve got great taste!
It’s neat that they make food in small batches so it’s more fresh. That was one of my concerns when we fed kibble. Took forever to go through a bag!
I tried their diatomaceous earth. I used to add it to my tea and our dogs food. Great detox. Their dry food has chicken liver (allergies) so I couldn’t use it with our dogs (for training treats), but they have treats too.
Wow, that looks like really great food. I think our boys would really love to try the venison and egg.
This is the first time I am hearing about bioavailability – Very interesting to learn that eggs are the only protein that is used by the body completely. Made me check the label of our current food and I am glad to see that whole eggs are the #2 ingredient!
Absolutely love the expressions in that last pic!
I’ve been wondering about this brand. Thanks for your thoughts on it. I might just have to do some more research now!
You should add SlimDoggy to your research too. They do a great rating/breakdown and it’s nice to have a few different perspectives.
I have heard great stiff about this food!!!
