Zen Pets and Hemp Oil for Pet Anxiety

October 26, 2017 20 Comments

Zen Pets & Hemp Oil for Pet Anxiety

Does your dog suffer from anxiety or inflammation? Populum's Zen Pets may be the hemp oil solution you're looking for.

Mauja’s anxiety is something we’ve been tackling for a long time. At around 8 months of age, we went into our local Petco, something we had done a million times before, and she crawled onto one of the shelves and hid. This happened again and again and in more and more places.

We started working with a trainer, attempting to desensitize her to the things that caused her anxiety. Unfortunately, things continued to decline. We tried several supplements and various combinations to help with the desensitization until we finally resorted to Prozac. As much as I hated to put her on medication, it was the first time we saw progress. She still has a long way to go, but she is definitely more relaxed than she used to be.

Mauja has been on Prozac for approximately two years while we searched for a better solution. Every time I learn about a product we haven’t tried before, I’m eager to test it out. The problem with most supplements is that they are in treat form, which Mauja can be extremely particular about, especially when she’s stressed.

When it comes to natural supplements, there are a variety of options. However, we typically prefer products containing hemp oil.

Hemp Oil

Hemp oil, derived from hemp plants, is a non-psychoactive oil containing extracts of natural compounds, such as phytocannabinoids and terpenes. These compounds help to regulate and stabilize your body by interacting with our internal receptors and nervous system.

Hemp oil is extracted from high-CBD, low-THC cannabis, meaning it will not get you high and is safe for all ages. It has been found to have several uses:

  • Eczema treatment
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Inflammation
  • Insomnia
  • Anxiety
  • Migraines
  • Depression
  • PTSD
  • Chronic pain
  • Arthritis
  • And several other uses

Populum Zen Pets

Does your dog suffer from anxiety or inflammation? Populum's Zen Pets may be the hemp oil solution you're looking for.

If you have a pet that suffers from anxiety or you suffer yourself, I’m sure you have seen hemp oil products around. With so many options, it can be difficult to find the right one. All hemp oil products are not created equally.

Pet Hemp Oil is created using just three ingredients:

  • Hemp oil. Populum’s CO2 extracted pure hemp oil is derived from 100% USA grown hemp. The hemp oil is non-concentrated and thoroughly tested for consistency and purity.
  • Hemp seed oil.  Packed with essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals, hemp seed oil is considered one of nature’s perfectly balanced oils.
  • Extra virgin coconut oil. Coconut oil helps keep the digestive tract functioning properly and boosts immunity.

Aside from using only a few natural ingredients, my favorite thing about Zen Pets is that it is a liquid supplement. Rather than hope that Mauja will be willing to eat a treat in her stressed out state, I can simply place a few drops on her tongue. If your dog doesn’t have an issue with taking treats or supplements, you can simply put a few drops on your dog’s food.

We’ve been using Zen Pets in addition to Prozac for the last few months while we continue to work on desensitization. So far, we’ve been really pleased with the results. Mauja is less anxious in social situations and is more adaptable. She also hasn’t been getting triggered as easily. I’m hoping to taper out the Prozac soon!

Trick or Treat Giveaway Hop 2017 | Kiss

October 20, 2017 95 Comments

This year, I decided to reach a little big and try and teach a trick to our new Great Pyrenees foster puppy, Kiska. Since she was picking up on things so quickly, I figured, let’s try and use her for this year’s Trick or Treat Giveaway Hop!

Let’s get a kiss from ‘Kis’ka’ 😉

The easiest way for me to teach ‘kiss’ has always been to start with touch. If your dog already knows touch, feel free to skip ahead. If not, it’s super easy.

Touch

Kiska, our Great Pyrenees puppy, at 10 weeks.

In my opinion, ‘touch’ is one of the most versatile tricks you can teach your dog. It can be used for multiple tricks, such as turning off a light, pushing open a door, etc. It’s also a great distraction exercise in a stressful situation. When Mauja is feeling stressed, we play games with touch to keep her mind occupied.

  1. Present your dog your hand. Dogs are naturally curious animals, so typically, they will reach their snoot out to touch your hand. When he does, click and treat.
  2. Put your hand out of sight for a second or two and then show your hand again. When the snoot touches your hand, click and treat again.
  3. Continue practicing with both hands, at multiple angles, and from varying distances.

Note: Touch can also be taught with a target stick rather than your hand.

Kiss

Kiska, our Great Pyrenees puppy, at 10 weeks.

Once you feel your dog is responding positively to touch, it’s time to move on to kiss.

  1. Move your hand (or target stick) close to your lips for your dog to touch with her snout.
  2. Move your hand closer and closer to your lips (or cheek if you prefer the kiss there), continuing to ask for touch.
  3. Ask your dog becomes more comfortable with the position, place your hand right next to your lips to lure your dog to ‘kiss’ your lips (or ‘touch’ your lips).
  4. Continue to practice asking for ‘kiss’ while gradually removing your hand as a lure.

Now that you’ve learned the trick, how about we discuss the treat?

Our Obsession with Only Natural Pet

October 10, 2017 3 Comments

Our Obsession with Only Natural Pet

It's no secret that we love Only Natural Pet. They provide high-quality food and chews at affordable prices and the fluffies are obsessed with all of it.

If you’ve been following us for awhile, you know that Mauja and Atka are picky, picky, picky. I have to constantly change their food or mix up their meals somehow. I have a hard enough time getting weight on them as it is!

Only Natural Pet is always my go-to for the fluffies’ food. Their food is not only high-quality but affordable as well. The variety of recipes makes it easy to do a rotation diet.

So, obviously, I was beyond thrilled to receive the opportunity to try Only Natural Pet’s Wholesome Homemade dehydrated dog food. It’s perfect to mix up their meals or as a stand-alone meal.

Only Natural Pet Wholesome Homemade

It's no secret that we love Only Natural Pet. They provide high-quality food and chews at affordable prices and the fluffies are obsessed with all of it.Wholesome Homemade is an easy way to prepare a fresh, healthy meal for your dogs. I don’t know what your schedule looks like, but I’m pretty sure it’s as insane as mine. Between a two-hour work commute and other obligations, I’m often tapped out. Chopping up veggies is the last thing I want to do in with the few minutes I have to myself.

Here are a few things I love about Wholesome Homemade:

  • Grain and white potato free
  • Quick and easy – just add warm water
  • No by-products and nothing artificial
  • No artificial colors, preservatives, or fillers
  • Whole meat sources.
  • Multiple recipes

The last point is one of my favorites about Only Natural Pet’s Wholesome Homemade – they have multiple recipes. Currently, you can choose from the poultry recipe, the red meat recipe, and the fish and fowl recipe. This makes it super easy to keep them interested in their food! Currently, the red meat feast is their favorite. Although, the fish and foul recipe is a close second.

The first time I made the food, it was a bit “soupy”. The fluffies aren’t a big fan of overly liquid food, so the next time I just used slightly less water. I think if you prepare the food and let it soak overnight, you wouldn’t have that issue.

Lamb Log & Lamb Trachea

It's no secret that we love Only Natural Pet. They provide high-quality food and chews at affordable prices and the fluffies are obsessed with all of it.

I’m not going to lie – I was pretty impressed with the Lamb Log. I’m really picky in the chews I give Mauja and Atka with all the horror stories you hear today. The chews didn’t break or splinter, and they lasted a surprisingly long time.

We were also able to try the Lamb Trachea which was a pyrfect starter chew for little Miss Kiska. It lasted hours for her, but Mauja and Atka devoured them in about five minutes. I always forget how long chews last for puppies and small dogs!

Halloween for Dogs

October 9, 2017 3 Comments

How are you spending Halloween with your dog? Halloween can be a lot of fun or extremely stressful. We've rounded up some ways to make it a great time of year!

Halloween for Dogs

Pumpkins, and scarecrows, and skulls, oh my!

It’s officially fall here in Washington: cool in the morning and evening with a warm sun in the afternoon. While I’m a summer girl (I want things hot, hot, hot), I know the fluffies are enjoying the cooler days. Let’s be honest – when they’re happy, I’m happy.

I’m drinking hot apple cider, watching Hocus Pocus, and trying to get myself into the Halloween mood. To help push myself along, I’ve rounded up a few great Halloween posts! If you’re struggling to get festive, if you need some fun ideas, or if you’re trying to figure out how to get your dog through Halloween, check out the posts below.
