My Training Inspiration

January 10, 2017 14 Comments

My Training Inspiration

I had half of this post written thinking I knew who my training inspiration was. I wrote about Mauja and Atka and how their pyr nature pushed me to be a better trainer. I wrote how they forced me to learn new techniques, change my habits, and get creative. I went on and on about them until it hit me: they weren’t my first training inspiration.

Kaeto was.

If you’ve been around here awhile, you know a bit about Kaeto. Kaeto was the first dog my husband and I got together – he’s what truly made us a family. After moving across the country and away from family, we knew we couldn’t be without a dog. So, we headed to the local shelters and immediately fell in love with Kaeto.

It's Dog or Nothing

His different colored eyes, his freckles, and his half floppy ears – I couldn’t resist that face. He was extremely malnourished and had obviously had zero training. At about a year of age, he didn’t know how to sit or even his own name. He came home with us later that day.

Over the next few weeks, we slowly started to realize the extent of his “issues”. While the shelter told us he wasn’t leash-reactive, he definitely was. They also told us he was great with other dogs, which he wasn’t. He was far too excited and didn’t know how to handle his emotions, which often turned into aggression. He also had terrible separation anxiety and chewed his way through a metal crate in less than a half hour.

I quickly realized why he was relinquished by not one, but two families. However, I knew he wasn’t going anywhere. He was ours and ours to stay.

If he couldn’t sit on my lap, he would nap like this 😉

Since we had just moved and were only supposed to be in that location for 5 months, I didn’t get a job. This gave me ample time to work with Kaeto. I knew how to teach basic commands, but Kaeto’s needs went far past that. I can’t even remember the number of books I read and hours I spent online researching and learning.

We were out and about every day. Kaeto taught me how to exercise a dog on a bike and just how much energy a dog can have. He taught me how to be patient. He taught me how to get out of my comfort zone. He taught me more than I can possibly say.

Kaeto lived with us for less than a year before he very unexpectedly passed away. I still remember that day like it happened in slow motion and am tearing up as I write this.

Thanks to Kaeto, I learned how to work on so many skills, including leash-reactivity, over-excitement, separation anxiety, and overall socialization. He pushed me to my limits and there were days I cried and cried because I was so overwhelmed.

But thanks to Kaeto, I now have the confidence to take on “tough cases”. I’ve built a foundation for dealing with difficult behavioral issues. I can help save more dogs.

So, here’s to Kaeto – my true training inspiration. We miss you every day <3

Keeping Our Home Presentable with Swiffer

January 5, 2017 44 Comments

If you have a double-coated dog, how do you handle the fur? If we don't do daily brushing sessions, my home pays the price! Thankfully, Swiffer makes it quick and easy to keep our home fur-free.

Keeping Our Home Presentable with Swiffer®

This post is sponsored by Swiffer® and the BlogPaws® Pet Influencer Network™. I am being compensated to help share information about Swiffer products for pet parents, but we only share information we feel is relevant to our readers. Swiffer is not responsible for the content of this article.

Can someone please tell me how it can possibly be 2017 already? I don’t know about you, but I was ready for the start of a new year. It always encourages me to look back on the past year, determine my successes, and decide what I want to work on in the next year. Ah yes, those popular New Year’s Resolutions. I mentioned earlier this week that resolutions aren’t necessarily my thing. However, I always set goals for myself. Amidst the many, many goals I have, I have several that involve the fluffy butts:

  • Complete the therapy dog certification with Atka
  • Find a carting class to participate in with Mauja
  • Dabble in Rally with Atka (yes, pyrents – I’m serious! ?)
  • Get the fluffies back on a consistent grooming schedule

I used to be so good with our grooming routine. Mauja and Atka were being brushed most nights of the week. I’d turn on the TV and give them a nice brush to end the day. While grooming isn’t something they really enjoy, I have always found it relaxing. However, I’ve been seriously slacking recently and only been brushing them about once per week. My house has paid the price for that.

If you have a double-coated dog, how do you handle the fur? If we don't do daily brushing sessions, my home pays the price! Thankfully, Swiffer makes it quick and easy to keep our home fur-free. Even with daily brushing, shed happens. There’s a common saying for pet parents of dogs with double coats: “My dog only sheds twice per year. For six months in the spring and six months in the fall.” It goes without saying that with only weekly brushing sessions, pet hair envelops my home. Talk about embarrassing if someone wants to swing by the house last minute! Thankfully, I’ve developed a super quick, super easy pet clean-up routine for when I slack in my daily pet grooming.

  1. Quickly vacuum the carpeted areas a guest might see.
  2. Run the Swiffer® Sweeper® on the laminate flooring.
  3. Spot clean the muddy paw prints with the Swiffer® WetJet™, which are ALWAYS there – darn Pacific Northwest living! 😉
  4. If I have an extra minute, I’ll run my Swiffer® Duster™ over the coffee table and entertainment center to remove the fur (how does so much fur end up on the elevated surfaces?!).

Swiffer

There are so many reasons I love using Swiffer products, but here are a few top benefits:

  • All are quick, easy, and lightweight
  • The dry cloth for the Swiffer Sweeper has grooves which trap dirt, dust, and hair.
  • The wet cloth easily dissolves dirt and grime without the hassle of a mop and bucket.
  • The Swiffer Duster showcases Dust Lock Adhesive which easily cleans all the nooks and crannies in your house for a 3x better clean than a feather duster.

Like every product, it isn’t perfect for all situations. Pyr fur is long and thick and when I only do weekly a brushing, there is a lot to sweep up. It doesn’t always “lock” the copious amounts of fur. However, it still does a great job of collecting the fur into an easy to manage pile while simultaneously trapping the dirt that brooms miss.

Pro tip: After running the Swiffer, simply prop it in the corner. The Swiffer Sweeper will collect all the dust and hair and disguise it until you have a moment to clean up the excess. Or if you’re like me, until you decide you’ve piled up enough fur in the corner 😉

Daily grooming helps pets and pet owners bond in many ways, and can prevent shedding, but shed happens! With Swiffer, pet parents can get a thorough clean in minutes, so pet hair mess is never an obstacle to bonding. – Dr. Evan Antin, Swiffer Spokesperson

Great Pyrenees New Year’s Resolutions

January 3, 2017 9 Comments

I set goals for myself every year, so why shouldn't Mauja and Atka have goals as well? Here are our Great Pyrenees New Year's Resolutions.

Great Pyrenees New Year’s Resolutions

I’m not one to make resolutions for the new year, but I do always set goals for myself. I have a lot of goals this year, many involving Mauja and Atka. This year I will finally get the courage to take Atka for his therapy test – I know we can do it! Setting my own goals got me thinking, shouldn’t the fluffies have goals, too? Here are Mauja and Atka’s Great Pyrenees New Year’s Resolutions for 2017.

Mauja

  1. Accept that outdoor cats are okay and eliminate the need to yell at them to come inside everytime one passes the house.
  2. On the rare occasion that the bed is chosen as the ideal place to sleep, sleep on mommy’s side of the bed rather than daddy’s (unlike Nick, I don’t mind being squished!).
  3. Be less of a drama queen about wearing a harness.
  4. Stop sneezing in people’s faces.

I asked Mauja if she had anything she felt she should add to her list. She said she only has one goal for 2017: eat more marshmallows. 😉

She didn’t want to hear it when I told her she gets quite enough marshmallows.

Atka

  1. Stop hovering over Mauja as she finishes her treat. If she decides she doesn’t want the rest of it, she’ll walk away – no need to stay so close 😉
  2. Trust that the neighbor using the very tall ladder in his backyard knows what he’s doing. Barking at him is only distracting.
  3. Close mouth and swallow before walking away from the water bowl.
  4. Refrain from trying to lie down in and/or drink out of every puddle.

I also asked Atka if he had anything to add to his list. Atka’s 2017 goal: figure out how to keep Mauja off of his blanket.

Fair, Atka. Fair. She is becoming quite the blanket hog these days.

I could list many, many Great Pyrenees New Year’s Resolutions, but I’m trying to keep things reasonable here 😉

Do you think your dog should have any goals for 2017? If you asked your dog, what would he say his goals would be?
