Hiking, a Newfie, and Pictures, Oh My!

May 31, 2016 5 Comments

I haven’t done a post like this in quite some time, but I’ve had multiple people requesting a weekend adventure post. While this wasn’t anything crazy, it was definitely a fun time! Prepare for picture overload 🙂

With our move less than a week away, we wanted to do a few more things before we hit the road. So, we headed out for a fluffy weekend adventure.

First stop, Starbucks.

I knew we had about an hour and a half drive to our hiking destination so we decided to make a stop for some coffee. Mauja and Atka know the Starbucks drive-through and demand their puppaccinos. Normally, the baristas give the pups giant breed-sized puppaccinos, but this time, they were the size of a medicine cup.

Great Pyrenees with Starbucks

The fluffies didn’t care – they were just happy to get some whipped cream (and managed to drool all over my hands and the car)!

After our quick pit-stop, we were on our way to Mount Helena!

Mount Helena

Even though this hike was less than two hours away from us, we had not done it in the three years we lived in Montana! I was interested to see how Mauja and Atka would do with such a steep hike since we usually walk pretty flat surfaces.

Great Pyrenees on a road trip

As you can see, they were ready to go! Oh, and there was a dog in the distance so they had zero interest in posing for the camera 😉

The hike to the top was nothing for Mauja and Atka. However, on almost 9 weeks of a liquid diet, I was feeling the burn! Thankfully, Atka had enough gusto to keep me going the entire way to the top.

After about 45 minutes, we were treated to this extraordinary view.

Mauja and Atka had a blast and put those double dew claws to work! Even though they are clumsy giants, they were able to move through the rocks and obstacles with such ease. Atka kept looking back at me like, “Come on, mom! What are you waiting for?”

The hike itself was fairly uneventful, but it was definitely a beautiful one. I’m glad we took the time to do it before leaving Montana. Mauja and Atka were completely tuckered out by the time we reach the bottom.

New Friends

On Sunday, we headed to the park to meet some friends who have the most adorable Newfoundland ever! I was really interested to see how Atka did with the puppy since he tends to be terrified of puppies. I hoped that even though she was 4 months, her 51-pound body would be deceiving 😉

IMG_7656edit

LOOK HOW CUTE SHE IS!

Not surprisingly, Atka never took to the puppy. When she tried to interact with him, he would tuck his ears and body and then scamper away. Maddie (the puppy) was extremely well-mannered and gave Atka his space. She was also very mellow which definitely helped Atka become more comfortable. Atka was very curious and did try and sneak some sniffs when she wasn’t paying attention to him.

Great Pyrenees and Newfoundland puppy

Mauja, being typical Mauja, loved the puppy, but was more interested in getting pets from the humans. That gave me plenty of time to snuggle the puppy! Who could complain about that?

After lots of sniffing and snuggles, all of the dogs were exhausted and ready to take a nap.

IMG_7632edit Great Pyrenees

We decided to try and get a group shot, which I remembered is insanely difficult with a puppy. Add one dog who didn’t want to be near the puppy (Atka) and another who was too lazy to move (Mauja), and we had quite the challenge.

While definitely not our best group shot, all three dogs are in the picture!

So there you have it – our weekend adventure! What did you do with your dog this weekend?

How To Create a Giant Breed Dog Nook

May 27, 2016 4 Comments

After falling in love with several DIY dog room projects on Pinterest, I decided to test my crafting skills by creating a giant breed-friendly dog nook for our two Great Pyrenees.

How To Create a Giant Breed Dog Nook

I apologize in advance for the less than stellar picture quality. This room is in pretty much the darkest area of the house and no matter what I did, I could not get good pictures!

Before Atka came home with us, I wanted to set up a “feeding area” for the dogs. While Mauja had never shown signs of food aggression, I didn’t want to take a chance with a new puppy. I did some experimenting with crates and separate areas around the house but couldn’t find an area I liked. Plus, I didn’t want things just sitting around. I wanted a dedicated dog nook.

Eventually, I decided that we really didn’t need our Harry Potter closet (the closet, or cupboard, under the stairs) for storage. I emptied it out, took out a few shelves, and turned it into a feeding area. We put up a baby gate so each dog would have their own side and set their food bowls facing opposite directions.

It worked perfectly. That is… until I decided it looked like a complete mess.

After falling in love with several DIY dog room projects on Pinterest, I decided to test my crafting skills by creating a giant breed-friendly dog nook for our two Great Pyrenees.

One year ago (yes, one year ago), I was inspired by some pictures on Pinterest showing super cute dog areas.

So, I decided to get creative and went to work.

Step 1: Find Your Perfect Area

For us, we had a closet under the stairs (I call it our Harry Potter closet). Maybe you have a small room, or even just a corner of a room that you want to dedicate to your dog. Just find a place that makes sense for you!

Step 2: Clean Out the Area

Even after initially turning it into a dog area, we had some random items in the closet. I moved some extraneous items to make it more of a dedicated area for Mauja and Atka. Since we had absolutely zero issues with them sharing a feeding space, I removed the baby gate to make the area seem bigger and more open.

Step 3: Organize

I really hated the clutter of the room. Since it didn’t have a door on it, there was no way to hide everything. I went looking for some cute storage bins, but they were a bit expensive and I couldn’t find any I liked. For some reason, I decided I was talented enough to create my own storage bins. After failing miserably and becoming extremely frustrated, I followed this tutorial from Namely Original.

After falling in love with several DIY dog room projects on Pinterest, I decided to test my crafting skills by creating a giant breed-friendly dog nook for our two Great Pyrenees.

I used some boxes we had around the house and skipped putting the fabric on the inside. I didn’t see the point since no one would really see the inside. Plus, I figured things would end up spilling or crumbling inside making it dirty anyway.

After I covered the box, I cut out some paper dog bones to use as labels. Print a template off the internet and trace! Easy peasy. I can’t even handle letter stencils (as I learned earlier this week), so if I can do it, you can do it 😉

After falling in love with several DIY dog room projects on Pinterest, I decided to test my crafting skills by creating a giant breed-friendly dog nook for our two Great Pyrenees.

Step 4: Decorate!

I had a lot of fun with this step! Although, I actually never finished everything I wanted to do. Perhaps once we’re in our new house, I’ll add the final touches to really complete their dog nook. There were three main things I did to decorate Mauja and Atka’s space:

Add their names to the wall. I went to Michaels, picked out some wooden letters, and painted them. Then I hung them on the wall with some adhesive strips (no nails needed – phew!) over their eating spots. I didn’t realize it until much later, but this made it super easy for anyone to feed Mauja and Atka. They always sit in front of their names, so no one will accidentally feed them the wrong amount!

After falling in love with several DIY dog room projects on Pinterest, I decided to test my crafting skills by creating a giant breed-friendly dog nook for our two Great Pyrenees.Hang some cute pictures. I really, really like canvas prints, but have you ever purchased them? Holy fluffy, they’re expensive! I found a kind of cheater DIY version that is super easy. Plus, they turned out so cute! Check out this tutorial from Designer Trapped in a Lawyer’s Body. The only thing I did differently was to paint the edges of the canvas black before adding the photo (which she points out at the end). I tried doing it in the recommended order and completely messed up my picture 😉

After falling in love with several DIY dog room projects on Pinterest, I decided to test my crafting skills by creating a giant breed-friendly dog nook for our two Great Pyrenees.Get hooks to hang leashes. I had totally planned to DIY this part too, but after everything else I was DIY’d out. Eventually, I’ll go back and update them. I found some dog-themed hooks at Bed, Bath, and Beyond and loved them. For now, I think they work.

After falling in love with several DIY dog room projects on Pinterest, I decided to test my crafting skills by creating a giant breed-friendly dog nook for our two Great Pyrenees.

While there are still several things I want to add, I wanted to share this project with you before we move next week and it disappears! Some personalized PrideBites placemats are one of the first things I think I’ll add next.

Have you created a special area for your dog? What else do you think I should add to their dog nook?

I Have Celiac, but That’s Not Why I Feed Grain-Free #GrainFreeForMe

May 24, 2016 21 Comments

An interesting encounter really made me think about how I feed my dogs. Here's why I feed my Great Pyrenees grain-free dog food #GrainFreeForMe

I Have Celiac, but That’s Not Why I Feed Grain-Free

I have Celiac disease. If you’re not familiar with Celiac, I’m certain you’re familiar with the gluten-free trend. For people with Celiac disease and Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity (NCGS), a gluten-free lifestyle isn’t a choice, it’s a necessity.

Recently, I was out with Atka browsing the pet food aisle. I’m not sure why (maybe I’m a tad weird), but I enjoy looking at all of the available commercial foods, studying the ingredients, and then pulling out my phone to continue the research. Plus, it gives me ample time to work on down-stays with Atka.

This post is sponsored by Wellness® Natural Pet Food and the BlogPaws® Pet Influencer Network™. I am being compensated to help share Wellness Grain Free options, but we  only share information we feel is relevant to our readers. Wellness is not responsible for the content of this article.

An interesting encounter really made me think about how I feed my dogs. Here's why I feed my Great Pyrenees grain-free dog food #GrainFreeForMe

While I was looking through some of the Wellness® products, I ran into an individual I work with. We are not close, but there have been enough events that I’ve declined so she knows I’m gluten-free. She looked at me, looked at my cart, looked back at me, and said, “You’ve got to be kidding me. You even force your DOG to eat gluten-free?!”

I didn’t know what to say. Yes, Mauja and Atka consume a grain-free diet of commercial pet food and homemade food. While they have not always been on a grain-free diet, their switch happened before my diagnosis, when they reached adulthood.

Unfortunately, when this individual commented about my feeding practices, I was so caught off-guard that I didn’t know how to answer. Now that I’ve composed myself, here are my top 3 reasons for feeding my Great Pyrenees Wellness Complete Health™ grain-free food.

  1. Grain-free food provides more of a nutritional punch. Rather than being full of empty calories and nutrients, they get “more of the good stuff”, such as chickpeas, flaxseed, carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach, apples, and blueberries. In Wellness dog food, this includes natural ingredients with high-quality protein for full energy, prebiotics and probiotics to support healthy digestion, and vitamins A & E to support healthy immune system.
  2. Grain-free food can help alleviate allergies. Great Pyrenees are prone to both food and environmental allergies, so I wanted to be cognizant of that fact when determining their diet. Grains are a popular allergen trigger for this breed.
  3. Grain-free diets can help prevent ear infections, stomach upset, and other gastrointestinal issues. If Mauja and Atka are comfortable and happy, I’m happy too.
  4. A bonus, yet selfish, reason. Feeding grain-free food helps keep me healthy! I can get very sick from simply breathing in the air particles of their food or scratching my face while feeding them. The fluffies do not accept a sick mom who skips walks 😉

Atka’s Wellness Complete Health Update

Atka has been on Wellness Complete Health for just over a month now. We are using Wellness as his food base to ensure he is getting all of his essential vitamins and minerals, but then add a topper of homemade food. The Complete Health line offers everything he needs, but I always like to add a little something extra 😉

As completely shocked as I am to say this, Atka’s itching has disappeared in the last month. We did have Atka on a completely homemade diet and did not see any improvement, so we were getting quite frustrated. I tried a lot of experimenting, but I couldn’t seem to alleviate the itching.

An interesting encounter really made me think about how I feed my dogs. Here's why I feed my Great Pyrenees grain-free dog food #GrainFreeForMe

If I’m being completely honest, I don’t know why the itching has ceased since the switch, but I’m not going to question it! Atka loves the food, he’s not itching, and I know he’s getting great nutrition – I’m a happy pyr mom <3

The Complete Checklist for Moving with Your Dog

May 23, 2016 4 Comments

Will you be moving or taking a trip soon with your dog? Here's a complete guide to ensuring a smooth transition!
DepositPhotos|belchonock

As many of you know, we will be packing up and moving to a new state at the beginning of June. We are extremely excited to move and cannot wait to be in a new location. I know the fluffies are going to absolutely love it – especially their new backyard! Even though Mauja has already lived in four houses, I know the move will still be rough for her.

Mauja is easily stressed and Atka is the most routine-driven dog I have ever met. He does not like change! In order to lessen their stress and ensure a smooth transition, I’ve created myself a dog-focused moving checklist 🙂 Here’s the guide to moving with your dog!

Visit Your Vet

Before you move, make an appointment with your vet. You want to make sure your dog is up to date on all of his vaccinations and requirements, especially rabies, before the move. If you will be visiting dog-populated areas (and your dog doesn’t already receive the vaccination), it might be a good idea to discuss Bordetella with your vet.

While not always required, a health certificate is often necessary to cross state lines with your dog. Your vet will be able to perform a health examination to ensure your dog is healthy enough to travel and prevent the spread of disease. You should also request your dog’s health history to make the transition to a new vet an easier process.

Most vets have contacts across the country, so it’s a good idea to ask for any recommendations. This may help you find a suitable vet before you even move. Also, be sure to check the licensing rules for your new home and update licenses accordingly.

Update Identification

How long has it been since you’ve updated your dog’s ID tags? Now is a great time to ensure the information is accurate and most importantly, includes a phone number. This is especially important if you don’t have a house right away and will be living in a hotel or other temporary location.

If you dog is microchipped, check that chip! A microchip can shift so it’s important to have your dog’s chip checked for functionality. Make sure all of your dog’s online chip information is up to date and that you enter your new address into the database once you move.

Research Pet-Friendly Stops

If your move is going to take multiple days, take some time to determine your route and where you can stop with your dog. Find nice parks or walking trails for fluffy to stretch his legs and get some exercise, which will help reduce the travel stress.

You may also want to look for pet-friendly restaurants so everyone can take a break from the car and enjoy a relaxing meal. Most importantly, know where the pet-friendly hotels are located!

Pack Safety Items

This includes a crate, baby gates, or any car harness that your dog wears. Crates and baby gates are also very helpful for hotel stays if your dog shows any destructiveness when traveling. While neither Mauja or Atka have to be crated in hotels anymore, we do often bring baby gates, just in case.

Make a Travel Kit

Our travel kit, while massive, is exceptionally helpful in keeping a move stress-free. Here’s what we included in our travel kit:

  • Food (regular food and a topper to encourage eating when stressed)
  • Food and water bowls
  • Favorite treats
  • Chews (bully sticks, antlers, etc.)
  • Bottled water
  • Basic grooming supplies
  • Paper towels and Nature’s Miracle (in case of an accident/car sickness)
  • Poop bags
  • Blanket/bed
  • Toys
  • Medications/supplements
  • 1st aid kit
  • Grooming wipes
  • Leash
  • Collar, harness, gentle leader, etc.

Now that you have all of your things in order, you’re ready for moving with your dog! Wish us luck on our new adventure 🙂

Vimtag Helps Me Be a Better Dog Mom

Vimtag Helps Me Be a Better Dog Mom

Are you worried about your dog during the day or simply curious as to how they spend their time? Click through to read why we prefer a Vimtag camera to keep track of our furbabies! As many of you know, we’ve been dealing with two issues in our house lately: Atka’s itchiness and Mauja’s anxiety. While we have seen a dramatic increase in both of their issues, we’re definitely not in the clear yet. Atka is still itching more than usual and Mauja is still showing some severe anxiety.

When I had Mauja at the vet recently regarding her anxiety, I also wanted to talk about her fur loss. She has two patches of thinning fur on her hind leg that I noticed during a recent grooming session. When we thought that her thyroid was not functioning normally, we assumed that was the cause of the thin fur.

However, all of Mauja’s lab work came back normal so we were a bit stumped. The vet’s next thought was that she was chewing on her leg which was causing the fur loss. While Nick and I have never seen her chew on that leg, we couldn’t be completely certain. With both of us having full-time jobs outside of the home, we can’t keep eyes on them 24/7.

For a few years now, we have toyed with the idea of purchasing a security camera for the house – mostly to figure out just what Mauja and Atka do all day while we’re gone. I’m pretty sure they sleep all day, but Nick has some pretty wild ideas 😉

When we started worrying about their itching and trying to learn about any possible triggers for Mauja, the thought of a security camera became more than just a fun idea for us – it almost became a necessity. We always want to make sure we are doing everything we can to give them the best life possible.

But really, don’t we all just want to know what our furry babies are up to while we’re gone?

Vimtag Video Monitoring Camera

Are you worried about your dog during the day or simply curious as to how they spend their time? Click through to read why we prefer a Vimtag camera to keep track of our furbabies!

With the number of surveillance systems out there, it can be difficult to determine which one is best suited for your needs. There are several things that I love about the VImtag camera that set it apart from other video monitoring systems.

  • Two-way voice with a built-in mic and speaker (this would have been super helpful with our first dog’s separation anxiety! I always tried to talk to him through Skype, but the sound failed all. the. time.).
  • HD video
  • Remote pan and tilt to cover every corner of your home
  • Night vision for constant monitoring
  • Ability to monitor from multiple devices – perfect if you want to be able to monitor on-the-go via your smartphone!
Are you worried about your dog during the day or simply curious as to how they spend their time? Click through to read why we prefer a Vimtag camera to keep track of our furbabies!
So far, I’m right with my guess of napping all day!

Vimtag’s 4-Step Set-Up

  1. Head to vimtag.com and set up your free account (or download the mobile app and set your account up there).
  2. Plug in your camera to a power source.
  3. Connect the included Ethernet cable from your new Vimtag camera to your router (don’t worry – you can always switch to Wi-Fi connection after the initial set-up).
  4. Once the set-up is complete, determine where you want your camera placed!

While we have only been using our Vimtag camera for a few weeks, I am absolutely IN LOVE. So much in love that this is not the only time you’ll be hearing about Vimtag from us. With our upcoming move and the chance to finally foster, our new camera is going to be immensely helpful. Plus, I’m sure the fluffies have some crazy antics up their sleeves when they aren’t so camera shy. I’m so excited for all of the future possibilities!

Now be honest – how much do you want a security camera to find out what your furbabies are doing all day? Well, you’re in luck!

Great Pyrenees Info – A Beginner’s Guide

May 9, 2016 63 Comments

Have you thought about adding a Great Pyrenees to your family? Here's a basic guide to determine if a pyr might be a good fit!

History

The Great Pyrenees, or Pyrenean Mountain Dog, is an ancient guardian breed that originates from the Pyrenees Mountains between France and Spain, although many believe they can be traced even further back to Siberia.

These dogs were bred to handle the dangerous task of guarding flocks of sheep and other livestock on the steep mountains from predators, all without human intervention.

Paintings and literature depict Great Pyrenees at least 2,000 years ago, however often under a different name. In 1675, the Great Pyrenees became a royal court dog due to their beauty, elegance, and majestic appearance by King Louis XIV.

Appearance

The Great Pyrenees is a regal dog who is predominately white, although some have coloring on their bodies. Per the breed standard, Great Pyrenees may have badger marks in various shades gray, brown, and tan on their face and covering up to 1/3 of their body.

The double dew claws on the hind legs are also a classic breed characteristic.

Height at the withers is 27-32 inches for males and 25-29 inches for females. Weight should be proportionate to the size and structure of the dog. Typically, Great Pyrenees will range from 90-150 pounds at a healthy weight.

The Great Pyrenees is considered a medium boned breed (for reference, a Newfoundland is well boned and a Mastiff is heavy boned). This means that a 120-pound pyr could appear to be the same size as a 150-pound Newfoundland.

A Great Pyrenees should not be overly lumbering or light—the dog’s proportions are most important.
