Plant-Based Ingredients with PL360

August 31, 2015 12 Comments

PL360 for a Pet-Friendly Home

Big dogs, big messes – you know how it goes. I try to keep the chemicals to a minimal in this house, but let’s be honest – I’m not perfect; it’s always a work in progress! But what are the alternatives?

5 Benefits of Plant-Based Ingredients
  1. Constantly replenished by the environment so there is no danger of depletion
  2. Completely biodegradable
  3. Little impact on the greenhouse effect because production requires little energy
  4. No damage to the environment
  5. Production of plant ingredients benefits a large portion of the population

I was recently introduced to PL360, formerly known as PawGanics. We had received a package of PawGanics grooming wipes in a PetBox long ago and loved them, so I was super excited to hear they were even better now!

PL360‘s grooming wipes are durable, yet sensitive wipes to meet the needs of an on-the-go pet parent. The plant-based formula makes them ideal for cleaning paws, ears, and faces without irritation. Made from natural, cold-pressed seed oils, the wipes are antioxidant and vitamin rich to tend to your pet’s sensitive skin. The wipes are made without parabens, sulfate, phthalates, lanolin, and alcohol.

I have these on me all the time to keep my white dogs, well, white. Sometimes it isn’t easy – I noticed a nice grass stain on Atka’s head as we got ready to take pictures for this post!

Another item in the PL360 line that I was super excited to test was the odor neutralizing carpet powder. A few years ago, I tried using a carpet powder that I found in our grocery store. While I loved the results, I discovered Mauja was having an allergic reaction to it. I stopped using the powder and didn’t search for another one.

The PL360 Carpet Powder is also plant-based for a natural, allergy-free cleaning experience. I’ve been using the powder for about a week and am loving how much fresher our carpets smell. Not to mention, Mauja isn’t having a reaction to it! Yay!

Great Pyrenees with PL360

We also received the Multi Surface Cleaning Wipes, the Daily Grooming Shampoo, and the All-in-One Shampoo & Conditioner. Because the Cleaning Wipes are plant-based as well, they’re safe on toys, food bowls, and even counters. Talk about multi purpose! I haven’t had a chance to try the shampoos, but boy do they smell lovely! I’m excited to try them out next bath time. Mauja and Atka are not so excited 😉

Do you want the chance to try PL360’s natural, plant-based products? You’re in luck! PL360 is giving away prize packs to 3 lucky winners. Enter below!

Book Review: Saved By Gracie

August 28, 2015 13 Comments

savedbygracie

I crave different kinds of books in the summer and winter. In the winter, I want a long book that I can get lost in for weeks. Something about snuggling up with some hot chocolate and a good book makes me all warm and fuzzy. In the summer, I prefer quick reads; something that I can read over the weekend while I sit in the sun (or by the ocean if I’m lucky!).

Now, I don’t typically do book reviews because I’m behind enough on my current stack of books, but the tagline on the front of the book intrigued me.

“How a Rough-and-Tumble Rescue Dog Dragged Me Back to Health, Happiness, and God.”

Jan Dunlap writes about her journey of bringing a dog into her home in her book Saved by Gracie. She didn’t want a dog and in fact, was terrified of dogs. After a medical misdiagnosis, she dealt with severe anxiety that limited her experiences of the outside world. She lived in her own bubble; that is, until Gracie came along.

As someone that has had dogs her entire life, I found this read not only humorous, but eye-opening as well. Jan mentions things she never realized about having a dog that I foolishly assumed were common knowledge. Of course people don’t just know things, Kelsie! 😉

I loved reading about how Gracie slowly opened Jan’s world to once terrifying experiences. Things weren’t as bad as she expected them to be. In reality, she was missing out on life’s beauty.

There weren’t a hundred accidents or vicious animals waiting for me in the woods. Instead, there was a spring smell of the earth, the trickling sound of the stream, birds calling, buds opening. It was beautiful. – Jan Dunlap, Saved By Gracie

As the book continues, Jan discusses some research she read about the science behind the human-dog bond. Study after study has shown that individuals that have dogs are physically and emotionally healthier than those that do not have dogs. I know Mauja and Atka open me up every day, which for an anxiety-ridden introvert is a pretty big deal.

If you aren’t much of a religious person, like myself, don’t shy away from the book. Jan quotes a few Bible verses, but nothing that should deter anyone from reading it. Also, there are a few mentions of a trainer and training methods positive trainers like myself don’t agree with, but again, it shouldn’t deter you.

I found Saved By Gracie to be a wonderful read; a humorous take on a serious situation. If you’re passionate about the bond between humans and dogs, this is a must-read. So how about a giveaway?!

Jan was gracious enough to give books to two lucky winners! Just enter using the Rafflecopter widget below 🙂

Hello Nuzzle

When someone brings home their first Great Pyrenees, there are a few things I always suggest.

  1. Get them into a routine.
  2. Begin training on day one.
  3. Never let them off leash (an off leash pyr is a “disapyr”).
  4. Consider a GPS tracker and pet insurance.

Nuzzle is a GPS tracking collar and smartphone app that can be used for both dogs and cats. We always have our phones within arms reach, so why not be able to track your furry kids at the same time? The app allows you to track your dog everywhere he goes. Curious about how much ground your dog covers in a day? You’ll know that, too!

The collar is powered by cell service so it will be effective on all of your adventures. This means that it will require a data plan, but don’t worry – Nuzzle covers that. The tracker is also waterproof, includes rechargeable and removable batteries, and is detachable, meaning it can be placed on any existing collar.

My favorite feature is the geo-fencing ability. You can set a “safe” area where your dog is allowed to be. If your pup wanders out of that area, you’ll be alerted through the Nuzzle app!

Lastly, you will also receive a free trial of pet insurance, which I highly recommend (especially if you have giant breeds – those vet bills are expensive!).

I’m really excited for Nuzzle to be available! It will give many pet parents peace of mind when they’re away from their dog or out on an adventure. In the meantime, you can follow Nuzzle on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Do you think Nuzzle would be useful for your dog?

Fluffy Weekend Adventure

August 18, 2015 10 Comments

As much as I hate to admit it, summer is coming to a close here in Montana. We’ve had weather barely reaching 70 degrees accompanied by a cool breeze. I’m not a fan of fall coming, but the fluffies are itching for some cooler weather.

With the cooler weather this past weekend, I figured it would be the perfect time to take Mauja and Atka to the farmer’s market. The market here in town isn’t dog friendly, but there is one just over an hour away that is and is even bigger. So, we packed up the dogs, tons of water, and made a quick stop at Starbucks for coffee and puppaccinos before hitting the road.

Great Pyrenees

I had forgotten that there’s a huge fire in the area and other parts of the state are dealing with horrible smoke. As we continued to drive, the smell of smoke got stronger and stronger. I did a quick search and found that the air quality where we were going was labeled “good”, so we decided to continue on our way. Thankfully, we arrived to find that the smoky smell wasn’t really apparent in town.

However, it wasn’t all good from there. What’s a trip without some issues anyway? 😉 Not too long after parking the car, Mauja threw up and I got stung by a bee. It was a great start to our day… Thankfully, Mauja seemed fine so we decided to peruse the market.

We all had a great time looking through the stands of delicious produce and unique goods. The fluffies were most interested in the stand with homemade dog treats and pupcakes, Yes, we left with pupcakes. Look how cute they are! Well, were. They’re long gone by now!

Pupcakes

Mauja and Atka were show-stoppers through the entire market making it impossible to walk more than a few steps without stopping to chat with people. I love talking to people about the breed, but this was the most frustrated I had been while out with them in a long time.

Conversation after conversation went like this:

Person: Oh my gosh what gorgeous dogs! What breed are they?

Me: Thanks! They’re Great Pyrenees.

Person: Are you going to have puppies? I would love to have a puppy from you.

Me: No, we don’t breed – they’re both fixed.

Person: Too bad. Seems like they’d make cute, sweet puppies.

Aaaand, this is why there are so many pyrs in shelters. These people never asked about the breed and I had several people simply ask how much they cost (one of the many things to never say to someone with a Great Pyrenees). No one cared about their traits. All they saw were well-behaved, sweet, beautiful dogs. Beautiful dogs that require a lot of work and a lot of patience. A breed that not many should have.

Great Pyrenees Love

Anyway – after I vented to Nick about these people we left and went to the walking mall downtown. There’s several cute shops, fun sculptures, and art pieces where we stopped to get several pictures.

Finally, we went to PetSmart for a fun shopping trip where I could show off my new Tote Tails bag. (which we will have more on in a few days). We let Mauja and Atka pick out a new toy, grabbed some treats, and headed back home.

The fluffies slept the rest of the day and I may have taken a nap myself 😉 I always love getting them out on adventures for socialization and training. Plus, it’s great bonding for us to get out together as a family 🙂

Did you do anything this past weekend with your dogs? Do you have a favorite place to go with them?

Custom Totes from Tote Tails

I’m a serious sucker for anything custom. Silhouette customs have been a recent addiction of mine (click here to see an adorable one you can easily make!).

If the silhouettes include Mauja and Atka I’m basically sold.

Yesterday, I shared two pictures, one of Mauja and one of Atka, as a slight teaser for today’s post.

Yep, those were the two pictures used to create this adorable, custom silhouette tote!

I’m always looking for cute totes. Whether it’s to lug our groceries home, take my books to and from work, or to grab produce at the farmer’s market, there’s always a place and reason for a tote. Bonus points if it’s cute. Extra bonus points if it’s custom. Tote Tails checks off all my bonus categories!

Tips to Enjoy the Waves with Your #NewPetPartner

August 10, 2015 20 Comments

Tips to Enjoy the Waves with Your #NewPetPartner

Summer is by far my favorite time of year. Sunny days, water fun, and vacations – what’s not to love?! Mauja and Atka participate in the majority of our summer activities. I love having them with us and they love getting out and about and meeting new people.

When Mauja first entered our lives, we spent a lot of time preparing for our new fluffy baby. We researched, planned, and then researched some more. I felt pretty confident when she came home with us, but you always have to be ready for some unexpected challenges! Taking Mauja on her first beach trip was one of those challenges.

Here are 5 tips to help your beach visit go smoothly:

1. Make sure the beach is dog-friendly. Many beaches are only dog-friendly during certain times of the year or day.

2. Don’t force your dog. Mauja was scared of the waves at first and it took a few visits before she became comfortable. Let your dog explore at his/her own pace.

3. Pay attention to your surroundings. People don’t always pick up after themselves and can leave drinks or snacks that could harm your dog. Bottle rings, broken glass and cigarettes are often left as well.

4. Watch for over-exercising. Some dogs just have so much fun and don’t know when to stop! Make sure your dog is getting plenty of fresh water and shade breaks to hydrate and relax.

5. Clean up properly. Before heading out, make sure you clean up all your belongings (especially those poop bags) to keep the beach dog-friendly. Find some fresh water to clean the salt and sand out of your dog’s fur for a comfortable ride home. Oh, and don’t forget plenty of towels so you don’t bring the ocean back with you 😉

If you’ve taken your dog to the beach, what other tips do you have?

Does Positive Reinforcement Work for Great Pyrenees?

August 6, 2015 18 Comments

Does Positive Reinforcement Work for Great Pyrenees?

“The Great Pyrenees is a large sized dog and a dominant breed.”

“The Great Pyrenees is a dominant breed of dog.”

“It (Great Pyrenees) has an independent, somewhat stubborn, nature and may try to dominate a less secure owner.”

Let me start by saying that I do not like the words “dominant”, “submissive”, and “alpha”. Pack theory has be debunked – let’s move past it. I understand some people use these terms in a more humane way, but the stigma still exists.

Before bringing home my first Great Pyrenees, I did a ton of research. Article after article warned me that my Great Pyrenees would be a “dominant dog”. I would have to ensure I was “alpha” to prevent my pyr from taking over or becoming aggressive. I read that my pyr would need corrections, should never be on the couch, or have any of the same treatment as the humans. I started to wonder if I was making the right decision.

I’m thankful I didn’t buy into what I read or else I probably wouldn’t have Mauja and Atka.

Great Pyrenees are independent thinkers and extremely smart. They were bred to work on their own and don’t need to be told how to do their job. Just because a pyr isn’t guarding livestock doesn’t make the instinct go away. They need to be convinced that what you are asking is in their best interest. “Because I said so” doesn’t cut it with this breed.

Due to their intelligence and independence, people often feel these dogs need to be “put in their place”.

The common training method for pyrs and other livestock guardian breeds is to get your dog to respect you through reinforcement and consequences. If you teach your dog to “respect” you through consequences, what kind of a relationship are you creating with your dog?

Not one that I want.

I wanted Mauja and Atka to trust me. To know that I would never hurt them and always look out for their best interest. Does that mean they get to do whatever they want? Does it mean they have taken over the house? No. It means we work together to find a common ground – to build a positive, trusting relationship.

Working with a Great Pyrenees can be a challenging training adventure, but that just makes successes even more rewarding. If you go into training recognizing that your pyr is just as smart (if not smarter) than you, training will be incredibly enjoyable. Personally, I love the challenge of a smart, independent dog. The kind of dog that doesn’t plop into a sit in half a second. The kind of dog that makes me think outside the box. However, that doesn’t mean I snap their collars when they don’t listen or force them off of the couch. It means I became less noticeable than their breed instincts and I need to determine how to get us back on track.

From day one, Mauja and Atka were trained through positive reinforcement. Neither of them have growled at me or tried to “take over the house”. They aren’t possessive and they don’t make the rules. These are things the articles assured me would happen if I didn’t show my pyr I was “alpha”. Mauja and Atka sit politely for food, toys, and to get their leashes on for a walk – regardless of whether or not I have a treat. In true pyr fashion they take their sweet time, but they enjoy my affection and praise. They do this because we have a strong bond, not because they are avoiding consequences.

I challenge everyone with a Great Pyrenees or other livestock guardian breed to try positive reinforcement training. Enhancing your relationship will bring out the best traits in your dog, not to mention yourself 🙂

8 Photos of Happiness

August 5, 2015 12 Comments

First, I would like to thank Kimberley from Confessions of a Rescue Mom for tagging us to participate in the 8 Photos of Happiness! This was started by Ariel’s Little Corner of the Internet so head over there to see where it all began. Choosing just 8 photos was extremely hard, so I decided to keep it to dogs to try and narrow things down. Needless to say, it still took me awhile!

1. Atka at the river recently. Atka absolutely loves the water – something that most pyrs don’t really enjoy. Every time he is near the water he is so incredibly happy. That outward joy makes me happy. I can’t help but smile when I see this picture. Doesn’t he look like a polar bear? 😉

Great Pyrenees

2. It’s not the best quality picture, but holy fluffy how adorable! Atka was about 8 weeks in this picture and Mauja was beyond smitten with him. They’ve been best buds since day one <3

Great Pyrenees

3. When Atka’s litter was 5 weeks old, we went to visit so we could choose our puppy (read all about it here). We had decided on this little nugget and my husband captured this moment. It was the hardest thing ever to leave without him! Longest three weeks ever…

4. While we live in Montana, our wedding took place in Pennsylvania where my family lives. Of course we brought the fluffies as they absolutely had to be a part of our wedding! Mauja was the flower girl and Atka the ring bearer. I wish I had gotten better pictures of their special attire. Mauja had a beautiful bow and Atka a bow tie and the ring pillow. I’m looking for a shadow box to keep them in.
Great Pyrenees

5. Here’s a shot of the wedding party! Mauja and Atka were amazing. They started playing in the middle of the service which everyone, including myself, thought was adorable.

6. Can you do anything but smile and be happy at this picture? My in-laws have a lake house and we took the pups to visit. After a romp in the water, Mauja decided to relax on the deck to sun herself (yes, she loves to relax in the sun!).
photo 3edit

7. Mauja at 8 weeks – ahh the cuteness! She was the fluffiest, cutest, little puppy terror. We called her “little monster” at that age 😉
DSC_0696

8. This is the first picture we took of Kaeto when leaving the shelter. He was skinny and didn’t have any manners, but made up for it with his sweet, goofy personality. While this picture makes me happy, I’m crying as I type this. It’s been over two years and I still miss him every day. I absolutely loved his floppy perked ears and his two different colored eyes <3

Well, that’s our 8 Photos of Happiness! I can now tag up to 10 people and here are the rules:
1. Thank the person that tagged you.
2. Give a shout-out to the originator, Ariel’s Little Corner of the Internet.
3. Post 8 photos that make you happy.
4. Give a brief description of each picture.
5. Tag up to 10 people to participate.

I’d absolutely love to see 8 Photos of Happiness from:
1. Rubicon Days
2. My Brown Newfies
3. Puppy Leaks
4. Pawsitively Pets
5. Beagles and Bargains
