Managing the Undercoat

March 31, 2015 14 Comments

Great Pyrenees Blowing Coats

Spring means green grass, blooming flowers, and warm sunlight, but for those of us with double-coated breeds, it means something less delightful.

The blowing of the winter undercoat.

Oh. My. Fluffy.

The struggle is real, friends. You can literally pull loose tufts of undercoat off of your dog. Kind of reminds me the truffula trees in the Lorax.

You can brush your double-coated dog for hours each day and still fail to keep up with the fur. So what are we to do?

Keep brushing. Brush, brush, and then brush some more.

Bathe your dog. Bathing helps to loosen the undercoat that wouldn’t normally come out with brushing.

Befriend your vacuum. You two are going to be spending a lot of time together over the next few weeks.

Survive. The shedding season will end after a few weeks and you’ll be left with your normal-shedding dog (that still sheds ten times more than other dogs). Just remember that your dog will be so much happier without the added warmth of the thick, winter undercoat.

I know it can be tempting, but please do not shave your double-coated dog They need the protection of their coat from the summer heat and sun and their coat will actually help to keep them cool.

How do you handle your dog blowing his undercoat?

Psst! There’s still time to enter our HUGE blogiversary giveaway!

Green Beef Tripe Niblets

March 24, 2015 5 Comments

Only Natural Pet Green Beef Tripe Niblets

High value treats are essential for training success.

Have you ever failed to complete a trick with your dog in public that he does perfectly at home? Did your dog not know the trick very well? Was there a distraction? Was the new environment too stimulating?

I have encountered this a lot with the fluffies. We perfect a skill at home, but we need to practice in the real world. However, I can’t keep their attention with the same treats that work at home.

I need to kick it up a notch.

Great Pyrenees with Only Natural Pet's Green Beef Tripe Niblets

Enter Only Natural Pet’s Green Beef Tripe Niblets

These freeze-dried bites of deliciousness give me unwavering fluffy attention. Atka is in full-blown adolescence and his excitement is getting the best of him. I needed a treat that could get (and keep!) his attention when a dog, human, or tiny human appears. Adding the Green Beef Tripe Niblets to my high-value treat mix has worked wonders.

What is tripe?

Tripe is the stomach of grazing animals, such as cows, sheep, and buffalo. It’s important to feed your dog green (instead of white) tripe as the digestive enzymes haven’t been destroyed.

Why Only Natural Pet?

The Green Beef Tripe Niblets from Only Natural Pet are made in the USA and contain 100% green beef tripe. There’s no fillers which means no preservatives. These freeze-dried niblets are high in usable protein and essential fatty acids. I’m not going to lie – these treats stink. I made the mistake of scratching my face mid training session and smelled beef tripe the rest of the time. The smellier the better for Mauja and Atka so it’s worth it!

Think your dog would like to have freeze-dried green beef tripe added to their treat list? Or maybe you want to try the salmon oil we absolutely love? Use code “AFSAVINGS” to save $10 and receive free shipping on your order of $25 or more!

The Pet Store

March 23, 2015 34 Comments

I’m tired.

I didn’t plan on writing this post tonight, but after this crazy day I found myself sitting at my computer.

It was a wonderful Friday. Normally I have Friday’s off and work on Saturday, but this week it was reversed. Nick picked me up from work and we headed to the mall to pick up the video game he had his eye on. Boys… 😉 On our way back, I noticed the sign outside of the pet store.

1560744_894598537263334_8273774001241039563_n

Great Pyrenees.

My heart sank.

“Turn. Turn! TURN!” I yelled to Nick as I noticed the sign. We pulled into the parking lot and my heart sank when I saw it was closed.

My blood was boiling. I started thinking of everything I wanted to say to the pet store owners when we would come back the next day. I was going to ask about the puppies’ parents, the breeder, and where they came from. I was going to ask for pictures, documentation, anything. I knew the owners wouldn’t be able to provide me with any of this information or they would lie about it. Really, I just wanted to see how they would respond. I printed out information on Great Pyrenees so hopefully potential buyers would have a clue as to what they were getting into. I had everything planned out. The next morning I was going to give them a piece of my mind.

Everything changed when we walked in the door and saw those puppies.

Two of them. Two beautiful, Great Pyrenees puppies.

In a fish tank.

20581_894598593929995_8891551439035931771_n 11018580_894598603929994_8776819107446016728_n 11037888_894598570596664_8230437981505240931_n

I started crying. I sat down next to the tank and started talking to the puppies. Their birth date showed they were less than 7 weeks old – far too young to be separated from mom. They weren’t even acting like typical puppies. Obviously depressed and stressed by their environment, they offered very little interaction. My heart was breaking. I couldn’t stop crying.

Everything changed.

My mind started whirling. What can I do to help these puppies? I can’t purchase them. A pet store wouldn’t turn them over to rescue. I was so overwhelmed. I couldn’t think straight.

Nick sat with me and tried to calm me while my emotions flipped from sad, to angry, to heart broken, to furious. I hated the pet store. I hated the “breeder”. I hated the people that would support such an awful place. I hated myself for not knowing what to do.

Eventually, he got me on my feet and we left.

I hope with all my heart that these puppies end up in great homes. It’s all too common for people to act on impulse and purchase the adorable puppy without knowing the breed quirks. Believe me – pyrs have a lot of them.

All I know is that myself and the rest of the Great Pyrenees Rescue, Montana will be watching Craigslist and shelters very closely over the next few months.

How do we stop this? How do we save them?

Fluffy Soccer

March 20, 2015 9 Comments

Keeping your dog (and yourself) fit is vital to a long, healthy life. We had beautiful weather last weekend and wanted to get outside and enjoy it. One of our favorite things to do with the fluffies is go out into the backyard and play a game of soccer. Mauja always prefers to chase the soccer ball, while Atka likes the orange water ball.

Mauja’s got some great moves. She will actually “dribble” the ball a few steps before picking it up.

Great Pyrenees

They are really particular about which balls they play with. They each stick to their favorite ball and wait their turn.

Great Pyrenees Great Pyrenees

I love when their huge jowls flop over their toys 😉

After about an hour of running around the yard, we were all pretty tired. Mauja’s expression says it all. Such a happy face 🙂

Atka’s big, droopy tongue says we’ve worn him out. Nothing better than a tired puppy!

Facing Spring with Luv and Emma’s

March 16, 2015 23 Comments

Luv and Emma's Dry Pets

With spring nearing every day (hooray!), we are facing the dreaded thaw.

Those of you with dogs know exactly what I mean.

The mud puddles, water puddles, and goopy liquid all over the place. Of course, I never remember to keep a towel by the back door. My floors don’t stand a chance.

Luv and Emma’s knew exactly what us dog parents were going through, which is why they created their Dry Pets towel.

Luv and Emma's Dry Pets

Luv and Emma’s Dry Pets is a microfiber pet towel that quickly absorbs water from your pet’s fur and paws. The towel is able to hold 16 ounces of water yet dry very quickly. It’s soft, absorbent, and helps to reduce the paper towel waste you’d typically use to wipe your dog’s paws.

My favorite feature is the stretchable opening that allows you to hook the towel onto virtually any door handle. I hooked ours onto the back door where the pups come in and out all day. This way it is easily accessible when I see two muddy fluffies running toward me.

Luv and Emma's Dry Pets

Luv and Emma’s have two two versions of their Dry Pets towels: Dry Pets and Dry Pets Plus. The Dry Pets towel is 21 X 17 inches and the Dry Pets Plus is 36 X 23 inches. The Dry Pets Plus also holds 36 ounces of water! Perfect for drying off a freshly bathed fluffy.

Best of all, the towels are machine washable. Quickly throw your dirty towel in the wash then hang it on your door so it’s ready for the next wet, muddy day.

Want to try Luv and Emma’s Dry Pets or Dry Pets Plus? Enter our giveaway to win a free microfiber, absorbent towel!

When Mauja Met Atka

March 12, 2015 11 Comments

A few weeks ago I was feeling nostalgic and decided to tell everyone about our journey of adding Atka to our family. When we chose Atka as our new puppy, we had brought many towels and zip lock bags along. We used these towels to get Atka’s scent so Mauja could start getting used to it until we brought him home. A seemingly endless three weeks later, it was time for Atka to officially join our family.

After talking with the breeder, Nick and I made the decision to fly Atka to us. It would have been a very long drive and we all decided that driving would be more stressful than the quick flight. We scheduled the flight so it would be during his typical nap time and we eagerly (and nervously) awaited his arrival.

At about 11 pm, we arrived at the airport to pick up our new addition. A kind gentleman approached us with a crate while talking about what a hit this little puppy was during the flight. I didn’t care what he said – I just wanted him to open the crate and give me my baby! I remember every detail of that moment. Seeing that scared little puppy immediately relax when I had him in my arms. There’s no better feeling <3

Great Pyrenees Puppy

After a quick potty break, Nick and I headed out. We decided we were going to sleep in two separate places that night to avoid a stressed and tired meeting. I took Atka to the hotel so he could relax and Nick went home to be with Mauja. We wanted everything to go pyrfectly.

Atka slept on my stomach most of the night as he had no interest in relaxing anywhere else. Plus, I just couldn’t handle putting him back in that crate so soon. If you’ve ever had a puppy, you know how those first few weeks go. He whined every few hours for potty breaks, but he always went right back to sleep.

Great Pyrenees Puppy

We have a lot of wind in our area so potty breaks were challenging with a tiny puppy. At only 8 pounds, he was by far the smallest of his litter and a bit underdeveloped (you’d never know that now!). For reference, Mauja had weighed 17 pounds at the same age (and that was average for her litter). Add in the massive amount of snow and his little body was not prepared. I had to use my jacket to create a wind barrier so he could potty without being blown over. We had planned on taking Mauja and Atka to an outdoor, neutral location to meet for the first time, but the weather conditions didn’t allow for that.

Nick and I decided to do the intro at the hotel. We were both a bit nervous about the first introductions, but hoped our intense socialization with Mauja would carry over to the meet and greet.

Things went better than I could have ever imagined.

Great Pyrenees

Mauja was so excited to meet this little puppy and was able to contain her excitement enough to be gentle. Atka immediately tried to initiate play and Mauja responded appropriately. Nick and I breathed a sigh of relief and sat down to enjoy our new family.

We knew we weren’t completely in the clear since the hotel was not “Mauja’s territory”, but we were pleased the initial meeting went so well. After they both relaxed, we packed up to head home. Nick and Mauja got back before we did, so they waited outside for Atka and I to catch up. We arrived a few minutes later and Mauja started whining as I got Atka out of the car. She kept heading to the door and then tracking back to help Atka catch up. It was obvious she was eager for him to come inside. After another short play session, they cuddled up for a much needed nap.

Great Pyrenees

Words cannot describe how thrilled Nick and I were to see Mauja and Atka hit it off so quickly. We were shocked at the lack of adjustment period from a one dog to two dog home. I think Mauja really missed having a playmate after Kaeto passed away and was very excited to have that again. Mauja and Atka have been best buddies ever since.

Benefits of Salmon Oil: Only Natural Pet

March 10, 2015 13 Comments

Salmon oil has many benefits for dogs. Only Natural Pet has a high quality affordable option to improve your dog's health.

Atka has a few allergy issues. We’re not sure what triggers them as they are so incredibly random, but every now and then he will develop a small rash around his right eye. The rash doesn’t seem to bother him, but I give him some Benadryl to help alleviate any symptoms he might be experiencing. I really don’t want to give him medication every time his rash flares up, so it was time to look into alternatives.

After a bit of research, I determined that salmon oil or coconut oil could be a great option for dealing with Atka’s skin allergies. I had some coconut oil in the house and figured it would be an easy way to start. Getting Atka to consume the coconut oil? Not so easy. So, I moved on to option 2; salmon oil.

The Benefits of Salmon Oil for Dogs
  • improved skin and coat health
  • prevention and treatment of skin allergies
  • alleviates inflammation
  • reduces joint problems, such as arthritis
  • lessens symptoms of kidney problems, such as frequent urination and loss of appetite
  • cancer preventative
Potential Side Effects of Salmon Oil for Dogs
  • smelly breath (brush those teeth!)
  • change in stool
  • weight gain (up that exercise!)
  • stomach pain, dizziness, or nausea
Salmon Oil We Love

It’s important to find a pure salmon oil without filler ingredients. You really want to ensure your dog is getting quality essential fatty acids (DHA and EPA). Also, look for salmon oil certified free of toxins or heavy metals.

I am absolutely loving the Pure Salmon Oil from Only Natural Pet. Their salmon oil goes through a quick purification process to prevent the creation of trans fats and remove virtually all toxins and heavy metals.

On top of that, Only Natural Pet’s Pure Salmon Oil is packaged in a safe, eco-friendly bottle. The bottle is made of green, brushed aluminum with an interior epoxy coating that is safe enough to hold liquids for human consumption. This ensures you get the “freshest and safest fish oil available”. The Pure Salmon Oil bottle is even 100% recyclable!

Salmon oil has many benefits for dogs. Only Natural Pet has a high quality affordable option to improve your dog's health.

How Has it Been Working for Atka?

Atka’s rash is slowly starting to clear up and I’m hoping that continuing to use salmon oil will help avoid future flare-ups. We have also only experienced one “side effect”: Mauja and Atka will eat more food. The salmon oil is almost like a gravy to the fluffies’ meals. When they get their salmon oil, they always eat at least 3/4 of the food they are given. Now, I know this isn’t an issue for most of you, but getting the fluffies to eat enough is a never-ending task. They get SUPER excited (almost as excited as when they get wet food added to their dinner) when I grab the bottle and give their meal a little something extra. Human bonus: it doesn’t smell!

Only Natural Pet’s Pure Salmon Oil is definitely going to become a staple in our home. I’m contemplating putting this product on automatic shipment so I never run out. It’s a great quality supplement at an affordable price.
