This year, I decided to reach a little big and try and teach a trick to our new Great Pyrenees foster puppy, Kiska. Since she was picking up on things so quickly, I figured, let’s try and use her for this year’s Trick or Treat Giveaway Hop!

Let’s get a kiss from ‘Kis’ka’ ๐Ÿ˜‰

The easiest way for me to teach ‘kiss’ has always been to start with touch. If your dog already knows touch, feel free to skip ahead. If not, it’s super easy.

In my opinion, ‘touch’ is one of the most versatile tricks you can teach your dog. It can be used for multiple tricks, such as turning off a light, pushing open a door, etc. It’s also a great distraction exercise in a stressful situation. When Mauja is feeling stressed, we play games with touch to keep her mind occupied.

  1. Present your dog your hand. Dogs are naturally curious animals, so typically, they will reach their snoot out to touch your hand. When he does, click and treat.
  2. Put your hand out of sight for a second or two and then show your hand again. When the snoot touches your hand, click and treat again.
  3. Continue practicing with both hands, at multiple angles, and from varying distances.

Note:ย Touch can also be taught with a target stick rather than your hand.

Once you feel your dog is responding positively to touch, it’s time to move on to kiss.

  1. Move your hand (or target stick) close to your lips for your dog to touch with her snout.
  2. Move your hand closer and closer to your lips (or cheek if you prefer the kiss there), continuing to ask for touch.
  3. Ask your dog becomes more comfortable with the position, place your hand right next to your lips to lure your dog to ‘kiss’ your lips (or ‘touch’ your lips).
  4. Continue to practice asking for ‘kiss’ while gradually removing your hand as a lure.

Now that youโ€™ve learned the trick, how about we discuss the treat?

  1. Dexter knows “kiss” or as we call it “kisses”. I think he learned it because whenever he’d lick us we say “kisses”. Now when training if I say “kisses” he’ll do a quick lick for his treat ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. Yes, my dogs know touch and kiss. Also my German Shepherd will kiss his toys when I tell him to give kisses instead of chewing them. LOL.

  3. All three of my dogs can kiss. They just did it right from puppy hood! I can ask for a kiss kiss and get one or more!

  4. My dog knows this one, she gives her own version if you ask her for a kiss. She just butts her mouth against yours, it is pretty funny really.

  5. I have three rescued Treeing Walker Coonhounds. My girl, Kyoko, is a kisser by nature, so it didn’t really take teaching her to kiss. She’s so sweet!

  6. Cute dog! Maverick kisses upon command and there was no teaching, he just started going, we named it and now he does it upon command.

  7. my girls are great at this, they love to kiss. one of them even tried to french kiss. i just make a little noise with my lips and they want to kiss.

  8. My older dog knows kiss. Sometimes when he doesn’t want to kiss us but I want a kiss he’ll put a little snarl face on but still give us kisses, it’s funny. Our puppy doesn’t care to kiss us, no matter how much we ply him with treats.

  9. Oh my goodness, Kiska is gorgeous! My dog, Bentley, doesn’t know this yet. I will definitely have to teach him this one!

  10. I don’t teach my dog the trick, but he always “kiss” me when I’m home with excitement. He’s good at reaching my kips. Perhaps he just wants to show his happiness. Thank you for the tutorial!
    Kiska is so cute!!

  11. my daughter taught my dog how to do this and i like that he gives a one lick kiss and not a full on slobber attack ๐Ÿ™‚ so cute!

  12. Both Nala and Cody know this trick but you have to be careful because if they get to excited they might nibble your nose.

  13. My dog does know this. She likes to do it on her own, so I just put a word to it and used a happy voice to encourage her.
